question concerning 3rd party drivers

I was about to install Omega drivers, but my friend told me not to because by using 3rd party drivers, it would void the manufactor warranty on my radeon card. Is this true? I thought these drivers are pretty stable.

Smack your friend for me.

Seriously.

Right now.

One good swift motion across the head should do it.

Anyways, some modded drivers come with configuration tools, such as ATI Tray Tools, and one of the functions of ATT is that you can change the clock rate for the graphics chip, as well as the ram. Doing that will, technically, void your warranty.

In fact, let's quote Omega here:

Does installing the Omega Drivers will void my warranty?
No, a driver set is just software, software does not void a warranty, only hardware modifications or flashing the card’s bios may void the warranty.

As long as you don't physically remove/replace the heatsink with a 3rd party one, flash the bios of the card with another one, or change the clock rate of the card your card will still be under warranty. Also, you can get away with some minor overclocking, just don't go too far with it (infact ATI allows a 6 point clock adjustment on the GPU with their own utility in the Catalyst drivers).

I Hope that clairify things for you, and happy gaming.
