arrow The more things change...the more they remain the same....

Seems to be no different with Windows XP Home Edition.

I've had the OS for 7 days as of tonight.

I've already had a few 'issues' but 'nothing unusual or out of the ordinary' as I've had with the previous versions.

One 'major issue' has just been resolved. It lost my Secondary Harddrive. Shutting down and rebooting did nothing to correct it.
What DID correct it was starting up in Safemode, Uninstalling BOTH HDs and then rebooting and letting Windows redetect and reinstall them. In short, 'same ol', same ol''.

However, there are several things already about XP that I really like. But, as for me, the jury is still out as to whether those things really make the upgrade worth the price of a new OS. (The 'final push' I needed to get it was CompUSA had the upgrade on sale for $79.)

I'll write more after I've had it a while longer.

"We"?? Whaa, dig'? Nononono, you can't just put your right foot in, take it out and do the hokey-pokey!! You haven't been in we since you yourself installed XP!! No, you're an in-law at best, just hope you don't get divorced from 98, and break those last ties

Well,
I'm a two-computer man at the moment.

One still running with 98SE and my latest computer running XP Home.

It was hard to pass up at $79 on sale last weekend at CompUSA.

I still have 24 days left before activation limits kick in.

And, I'm still not completely sure about keeping it.

So, call me a fence straddler if you like. I'll admit I'm undecided.

I still have a dual boot of Win98se & XP although I only use 98 now for a couple of games I cannot run in XP. It took me some time to adjust to xp as well.

Edit: Mistakes fixed, excuse the drain bamge.

Window XP is a very big for resources

Here are my system specs:

Antec sx-1030B
Antec PP-510D Power Supply
Tyan Thunder K7 S2462 -NG NO $ยข$!
2 AMD Athlon MP 1900+ (1.6 ghz)
ATI ALL IN WONDER RADEON 8500 DV
2 sticks of Crucial REG ECC 2100 256MB Memory (512 total)
2 sticks of Corsair REG ECC 2100 256MB Memory (512 total)
Turtle Beach Santa Cruz
Promise Raid TX2000 ATA 133
2 40 GB Hard drives Maxtor diamond max plus 7200RPM (boot and backup)
2 60 GB Hard drives Maxtor diamond max plus 7200RPM (120-112GB Running raid 0)
Toshiba 16x dvd 1612
Plextor 24/12/40 black
Sony 3.5 Black floppy
All Vantec Cables to fit 3 18 2 24 (Floppy and dvd/cd drives)
2 Thermaltake 6CU+ 7000RPM
Ambient (Intel) V.90 hardware modem

I had to buy an extra 512 megs of ram to fix issues with my system but had to do a reinstall of Windows XP to fix so issues. The extra ram also helped with Nero (a BIG resourse hog), DirectX screensavers no longer have a BSOD, and some other small things.

Windows XP Professional is a stable system to a certain point, but at least I am not doing a reinstall every three weeks with windows 98 SE. I would install and uninstall all the time and would just screw up windows 98, but with windows XP I can pretty much install and uninstall very easily or just make a restore point and go back to it.

later

Just for the fun of it... I installed Windows 98se onto a blank 10Gig partition.

UGH!

I was greated with a nice BSOD from the get go... 512MB of ram, and Windows 9x just dont get along.

Did some tweaks (I cant believe that I still remember all of those little things) ran cable nut to help increase the speed of my home network, and cable connection...

Restarted a half dozen times...

Installed a game (Serious Sam) ... was greeted by yet another BSOD.

Never again... formatted the partition....

After using Windows XP pro for almost a year... I will never go back.

The only thing that I miss about Win 9x is the configurability. You could make the GUI look like anything that you wanted.

But with uxtheme.dll... That is also realised in XP... so, I have no complaints.

BSOD + Wolfie = very very very bad things!

ask WyreTheWife... if you want the truth.

I tried that sticky in the Heavenly Visions forum, but every theme I've tried out has been fux0red. Unless I install the StyleXP proggy where they work.

Care to provide simple instructions or link to a theme you know that works?

Here's my update on developments with XP Home Edition:

Last weekend, right after my initial post in this thread, I started having serious problems. Most were related to not being able to install the latest ATi Drivers.....nor being able to revert to a previous set. I kept getting the 'infinite loop' error unless I used only the original 6255 drivers.

Well, I formatted an extra hard drive I have and installed a clean XP Home on that hard drive.

I still don't have everything installed I'm used to using, but most everything is.

Now my problem is:

Games will crash randomly to the Desktop without any warning or error message. I wish I could get some input on that.

Also....just a note about 98SE and 512 MB RAM....I never had an issue with that combo on three different setups I had. Only if I tried to use more than 512.

Move the uxtheme.dll, and bat to the root directory of your wondows installation:

boot into safe mode COMMAND PROMPT ONLY.

Run the BAT file, and let it do its thing.

If you have installed SP1... you will need to replace the dll in any other place that SP1 by renaming them to BAK, and then replacing them from command prompt.

I did pick up the XP Plus CD, too. However, I have no intention of using Themes of any kind on my system. They tend to be resource hogs.

I prefer to use a simple BLACK background on my Desktop (to reduce glare) and a nice soft gray back ground for text windows.

I spend too much time in front of the computer to have to deal with constant glare.

Pagh.

You kids and your new fangled OSes! 98se is still the best around for gaming, if it ain't stable enough for you than learn how to tweak it better. I'll switch to XP as soon as I see any convincing reasons to or when 98se don't do everything I want it to as well as it does.

Well, Dig.....

I'm still not completely 'sold' on XP, but there are a lot of things I do like about it. I still have over 20 days before I have to activate it, so, I'm being very deliberate about what I do and making sure it's going to meet my own 'high expectations'.
