have YOU an illegal copy of windows XP?? new patches will NOT work according to MS.
Microsoft this week demonstrated its compliance with the core penalty levied against it in the antitrust settlement struck with the Justice Department last year. Government lawyers will review the company's solution, which involves a 40 MB software update the company says should be available in August. The Set Program Access and Defaults application can be downloaded from the Microsoft Web site or ordered via postal mail, and will let users effectively remove Microsoft applications from professional and home editions of Windows XP. Microsoft also revealed that code embedded in the patch would hamper illegal copies of Windows XP that were installed using a master key widely distributed on the Internet; those copies would not be able to deploy the patch, or any future fixes distributed by Microsoft. State attorneys general from nine dissenting states are pursuing tougher action against Microsoft, and the federal judge in charge of that case will not review the new solution until she decides to approve the Justice Department-brokered settlement. PC makers are expected to be able to generate more revenue with the ability to replace Microsoft programs with those of its rivals, since those companies will pay manufacturers fees to have their software pre-installed.

This isn't too unusual. They did the same thing with the Office 2000 service packs, making them error out if a certain CD key was used to install it.
Or, uh, so I've heard..
I don't have much to worry about with WinXP, though, 'cause my two copies are perfectly legal. Besides that, it doesn't matter how hard Microsoft tries, there will always be somebody cracking their security.

Oh really your supposed to pay for that stuff from Microsoft?
so does this mean youll have to wait for a hacked sp1 cd to go along with your hacked xp install?
I give it a week after the sp1 releast theyll be a "free" version available of the patches.

At least my "borrowed' copy of Windows 3.1 won't ever get hosed by any such updates.

I agree with the above 3 posts
I have used all of Microsoft OS's. Starting with the Hard drive as a floppy (dos). There are certain issues that people need to know. When installing Microsoft Office 2000, do install the rollup package on the update site first in Windows 2000. Install Office 2000 first on windows 2000. Same things go for XP in windows XP. Microsoft made master disks for Windows 2000 that did not need a install code (because I have seen an install with one). Some company out there may have a Master Disk of Windows XP Pro that does not need a code. Also when buying Microsoft software, the difference between Windows 2000 and Windows 2000 server is only the registry (thanks to 3am). The same things goes for Windows XP and Windows .NET server (but is very buggy when goes from XP profesional to .NET Server beta).
I give it about 1-2 weeks before someone cracks the programming and patches it for everyone.
later

With MSDN Universal subscriptions you get nearly EVERY bit of software M$ make, including current betas. The latest MSDN I have @ work inlcudes Windows 2000 - and it doesn't require a code. However, our subscription hasn't been updated due to cutting costs so I don't know if its the same deal for Windows XP in Universal or wether they both now require codes. I'll let y'all know when our subscription gets updated in a few weeks

From now on, customers looking to get the latest add-ons to Windows will have to verify that their copy of the operating system is legit.
Beginning Tuesday, the piracy check will be mandatory for all customers worldwide who want to download add-ons for Windows XP.
The only exception is for security-related patches. Regardless of whether a system passes the test, security updates will be available to all Windows users via either manual download or automatic update. The Microsoft Update and Windows Update utilities, which provide notifications of new patches, will require validation.
Yep, microsoft is trying again....

im pretty sure i just read some place that MS will still alow critical fixes adn what not to go to anybody. the reasoning is that if the system is not patched, it can allow viruses to spread and still run rampent. they would rather have a safe and secure system wether it be legal or illegal, instead of many unsecure systems that keep allowing viruses and worms to run wild and possible wreak havoc on everything.
*gah damn it, i didnt see there was a 2nd page here.

given that the only thing i download from MS anyway are patches, which can be obtained elsewhere, and directx, which i have on about 10 different game discs, i'm not sure ill be rushing to wal*mart just yet. and if the current 'protection' is all they got to keep people from using windows update then they just wasted a shitload of money and hype.

Does that mean my hax0red Nlite versions won't be updatable (sp?) anymore? Friend burned it for me which is a copy he got from his father who got his from work. 0.o It's corporate edition but it's been tweaked to hell and back and I think activation has been completely truncated. Is there another way to get updates if not or will I have to shell out another 200$?
(FYI - I'm not sure if I am "allowed" to post this. If not, please remove it and send me a PM, mods.)

Validation Failure: Invalid Product Key[0x80080220]
Why did it not validate?
Windows has been installed on your machine with an invalid product key. The type of key found on your system is typically licensed by organizations who want to use multiple copies of windows. If you do not have a Volume License Agreement with Microsoft, then you may be a victim of software piracy.
Steps You Can Take
Contact Your Reseller
Microsoft recommends that you print a report of your results and take it to the company from which you purchased your copy of Windows to rectify the problem. Click here to print the report.
If your reseller is unable to help you, you can come back to this page by adding it to your favorites list now.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Obtain Genuine Windows Software
If your reseller can not help you obtain a copy of genuine Windows, you may purchase a license for genuine Windows online now. Click here to learn more about obtaining Genuine Windows Software.

You can download the patches seperatly from 3rd party places...

Well I know for a fact thats not 100% true. Lets just say one of my pcs will be needing a reformat soon and it does not have a serial starting with FCKGW.

Awesome, because my version is kind of a grey area as in the Windows version per-say IS valid but I am neither a member of the registered corporation and the installer was pretty heavily modified. I will definitly buy Windows Longhorn though. (or whatever they named it now)

don't even thing it'll be tha hard but from what we seen so far it makes you verrify
before your geven acess to the link on thier site or before windows update lets you
download and install...
But not in the updates them selfs! not this far at lest... So it pluaseable you download it on
on legit copy and then install in on in illegitamte system. Thus its already defeated...
here is a good one for you! You have to be varridied before yourgiven the link to
download for a "you must be verfied file" But if you have the link to the file...
you can download and install it just fine! Direct from MS! If they don't implement
more then this what do they think we are as retarded as they are?
You disable a ceratin browser addon and it defeated wow MS that too a whole
of 3 minutes to crack..
