music files getting corrupted?
i did have a similar thread about this happening on WinMX. this has constantly happened on limewire for me. and now also sometimes on ares. songs after a number of days or weeks suddenly just will NOT open in WMP. it is fine in winamp though which is odd.
and no please dont reply to me to use a different crappy player, or go back to using winamp. my question is why is this happening? is this something to do with service pack 2. it is not always easy to redownload these songs

i thought at first limewire was doing this, it got worse with limewire. winmx wouldnt connect. now ares is doing it as well. also all 3 programs have lots of problems connecting popular songs to download. its really odd. ares is the best of the bunch though

i get an error saying WMP cannot play this format, winamp plays it fine though.
and then i click more information and i get this from their help
C00D1199: Cannot play the file
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. You might encounter this error message for one of the following reasons:
The file type is not supported by the Player. For a list of file types (formats) that are supported by Windows Media Player, see Supported file types.
The file type is supported by the Player, but the file was compressed by using a codec that is not supported by the Player.
The file type is supported, but you are trying to play it in a way that is not supported by the Player. For example, you might have tried to drag a DVD file with a .vob extension from a DVD to the Windows Media Player icon. Or you might have tried to open a .vob file by clicking Open on the File menu.
You are trying to play one part of a multipart file. Use a newsreader or other program to combine the files, and then try again.
Error ID = 0xC00D1199, Condition ID = 0x00000000

Seems like you've got an issue with the MP3 codec used in your Media Player. Try reinstalling the codecs in Media Player and see if that fixes the problems you're having
Get the codec pack here:

i did that before, and i did it again makes no difference. its like the files get corrupted by WMP or something. why does this occur simply over time? im sure its not the RIAA doing it lol

I have received several bad music files from limewire. Some dont play, others have weird noises or long times or silence. For example, I am on dial up and a supposedly 5MB song was downloading at over 20KB/S. Obviously this really isnt possible w/ dial up, and the file ended up being corrupted. The way to go is just find the whole album (legally of course :-) I have not had a problem this way.

3.16 Why can't I play an MP3 file?
If you receive a message that contains error codes 0xC00D0BB8 or 0xC00D1199 when trying to play an .mp3 file, the problem might be because the file has a compressed or unsynchronized ID3 header that Windows Media Player does not support for security reasons.
For more information about unsynchronized ID3 headers, in the Microsoft Knowledge Base, see article 814129, "Error in Windows Media Player 9 Series When You Play Specific MP3 Files."
For compressed headers or other ID3v2 data, you can use a tag editing program to remove the information. For example, you can use the Advanced WMA Workshop, available from the LitexMedia Web site. Or, you can use Winamp 2.x, available from the Winamp Web site. To use Winamp 2. x, do the following:
- Open the file in Winamp.
- In the Playlist window, right-click the file, and then click File Info.
- Clear the ID3v1 tag and ID3v2 tag check boxes.
- Click Update.
The file should now play in Windows Media Player.
SOURCE
Edit: Jitter, those files you got that have skips and static are from the RIAA. They flood those p2p networks with those files.
