Can you run more than one instance of Defrag?

I'm wondering if anything is preventing one from defragging more than one HD at a time? It's annoying to have to wait for one drive to finish before doing another.

Has anyone ever tried it?

Well, that may not be so bad actually. What I'd like to do is get all the HDs defragged while I'm away from the computer. If I can do more than one at a time, I don't have to do another one when I get back.

Now, just how much of a 'lot longer' are you talking about?

Defragging is a high priority process and eat uup a lot of cpu cycles so if you start it twice it will take forever to complete .

System Specs

remember, it's best to do a defrag while in safe mode if you don't already do so. It takes even longer to complete because alot of the windows background applications are turned off while in safe mode. As far as doing a dual defrag, the best way to test it, is by trying it out

PerfectDisk or Diskeeper, either one. I prefer PerfectDisk (I've used both), but your mileage may vary.

no real need for it to be done in safe mode. makes no difference real world. However I wouldnt use the built in windows defragger its too slow.

Iria mentioned diskeeper, its a good application as well, however its painfully slow as well. O&O Defrag is a decent application but perfect disk is the fastest and handles volumes very well.

Actually, I did do so after being told above that it could be done. He's wrong.

The defragger that comes with Windows won't let more than one instance be run at a time.

Zardon, I might pick up a copy of that soon. Until then, I'll likely just set up the task to run at certain times when I think I'll be away from the computer....or sleeping....whichever comes first.

Does Perfect Disk offer the option to schedule a defrag? Like Redguitar I have Diskeeper setup to start around 2:00AM and by the time I fire up windows at around 8:00am it is done.

I've tested for Diskeeper Professional for years and it rules (you can defrag up to 4 volumes at once). They will have a new version out shortly which is going to be going thru beta testing before release.

O&O is also a great program and actually rocks on Windows server applications. Perfect Disk is also a good app.
