Probably simple to resolve - my desktop icons are f*cked!

hello, i know this must be a simple problem to solve but i'm stumped if i know what to do.

basically i turned on the pc one day and loads of the icons were either blacked out or...screwy, like the pictures of what should be folders were a bottom part of the movie maker icon and stuff. i don't have a clue what to do and i've tried reinstalling my graphics drivers but no luck there. recently i noticed that if i use the pc a while sometimes a couple of them randomly turn back to normal but then i reboot and they go back again.

another problem i've had which i think i've somehow done myself trying to solve the above problem is that when i leftclick on something it searches instead of opens the folder, and i have to right click and search is at the top in bold and open is under it. its really annoying and somehow i got one folder to go back to open but everything else is still on search! argh!

hopefully someone will know exactly what i'm on about and help me out?

System Specs

I apologize no one has posted about this yet; questions of this nature are best suited under the tech section. Please give us a detail list of your specs, with OS that you use.
