"Active Ports" endorsement

Active Ports is a little program for Win XP That identifies open ports... Duh!

But that is pretty useful.... As I found out,,,

First I am running the updated MS Spyware beta (Updated a week or so ago) AdAware SE (Updated 1.06), Adware Away (might not be up to date), Spybot 1.3, Spyblaster 3.3, Norton Antivirus (Updated).

I use Firefox and Thunderbird for primary Browser and e-mail, with IE and OE for secondary.

I have XP home with SP2 and I do automatic updates and manual updates frequently.

I do not want my Hotmail account on T-bird so I use Outlook Express, lately I had trouble accessing Outlook Express. I had to re-boot the computer to be able to access it one time and then once I closed it, I could not reopen. (I did not try that right away).

I used all my above programs to scan for some type of virus or malware, spyware and all reported back clean. I started going thru my applications to weed out any that might hinder OE. I came across this "Active Ports" program and before uninstalling it ... I tried it

It showed a dozen or so things running, a good many I recognized as system stuff or things I wanted.

On top was a big 'Unknown' file and on the bottom was a file that I think said "MSIEN.EXE" or close to that. I did not have any MSI components in this computer (I do in others) so I had no Idea why this should be there. I thought I could safely get rid of it and if I needed it back, DL it again.

I deleted it using the "Active ports" feature and watched for a bit. It deleted the file and a few seconds later, the 'unknown" file at the top highlighted in red and then disappeared.

OE works fine now!
