no, mine is in the low 20's. Doesn't matter to me, 1 gig or RAM handles it just fine.

Right now i have 17 runnin n can still turn off the 2 ATI services, hotkey think n sumthin else another, i never use the hotkeys n the other one im not sure but i know i lose my "overdrive" function on my 9800xt if i disable either of them, which i usually do but havent yet cause of a recent driver install. the 2 u got i dont r AVWUPSERV.EXE and DKservice.exe, Seems AVWUPSRV is from yer antivirus prog and can be turned off n updated manually and DKservices can prolly go if you juss wanna defrag whenever U select to. this is prolly bout the limit 4 turning off services with me , we have a small home network n i left alotta the "network" ones on,
I also juss slipstreamed SP2 into my XP pro installer and used nlite to turn off a buncha stuff, havent tried it on my rig yet but installed it on my sisters p3 850 w/ 256 ram. installed it and only the essential drivers, and ended up wit 18 running processes i think it was, and no troubles yet, auto update works n all, themes r still enabled on both machines.

thx hobo,i was completely overlooking those.got it down to 15 now without any problems .the only other one i think i could get rid of is windows auto update service.ill probably leave it the way it is for now.you could probably turn off some of the network services if you are running a router or a gateway.atleast that is what black viper says.you could try each one and see if all is well.later

svchost.exe is the (you guessed it) host service for other services and processes. It's not abnormal for there to be several or for there to be different instances depending on what you're doing. I'ts also a favorite target of malware which sometimes liks to embed itself in this file so that it both avoids detection and starts everytime windows does. Check THIS doc a workmate of mine put together for our support team. Click on the process to see what it's doing. Understand some of these processes are peculiar to our environment in the Ford Motor Company and will not apply to home/performance machines.

15, 14 if you consider the task manager is one of them. Could also kill the spooler service if I never wanted to print and the two ATI processes could also go, but I use the polling service to monitor gpu temps with over drive, though I never use overdrive itself. Also I have no addiction at all for XP, this is windows 2000. This is an NF7-S rev. 2 machine with an overclocked XP Mobile Barton 2500+. Check the link at the bottom. I get spectacular performance out of this machine for what it is.
It's not just how much memory you have, I have a gig in this machine too. Less also = less opportunties for problems as well as how the processes interact with other processes as they're launched. There is a whole lot more going on than just the raw memory consumption. All it takes is one thing not play nice with something else and you're performance tanks even if you have 4 gigs of memory. Less is more in my way of thinking which of course isn't the only way, but it's served me well as I have repeatedly demonstrated at least to myself.

BTW, you could definitely set diskeeper to disabled and enable it only when you're going to defrag, point32 can go unless you really like the extra mouse functions, and winauclt.exe can be expunged for sure if you don't mind running windows update yourself. Avwupsrv.exe is your anti virus protection. I'm not telling you to do anything, but I can say I never run realtime AV and haven't had a significant virus issue on any of the 9 machines on my network once in over 3 years. I think anti-virus developers must take courses on how to pulverize computer performance. Almost nothing is worse, but if you run Microsoft mail clients and aren't willing to be careful you're better off with it on. Client side firewalls are horrendous too.

Here's a screen of my services window, I would've reduced it, but it gets unreadable fast. Could get rid of a few more too, but network functions make it worth it to have them running.

you could put posts #16, #17 and #18 into #15,
since no one was posting in between.
it's just i don't often see in forums that posters making 4 seperate posts in a row, just put them all into one.

Or 15, 16 and 17 into 18. It just didn't occur to me. I don't often post more than once in a row either.
