ive got about 30 seconds of crap that i dont use that load along with about 5-7 passes on hte loading screen.
the part i hate most though is that my comp hates cold boots and more often then not hangs on the first windows load. if i hit reset it will load with out fail.

go to the run bar and type in msconfig then go to the startup tab and uncheck all the crap you dont use. you can also this with unwanted services but instead of msconfig use services.msc

Mine is like 2.5... but.. before that it takes me about a minute to get through POST and then another 30 secs after that to wait for the HD to spin back up... and I already know its because of my dieing 100GB disk....

Disk (init. time: 1.19 sec)
Driver (init. time: 11.31 sec)
Prefetching (init. time: 13.43 sec) (Overlapped))
Registry+Pagefile (init. time: 1.65 sec) (Overlapped))
Video (init. time: 1.39 sec) (Overlapped)
Shell (init. time: 5.62 sec)
this's from a PIII 866 MHz, a desktop PC that could be the slowest PC on DH, i think, the last clean install of winXP is more than 2 years ago, the bootvis.exe were being used on the system many times at that time, on both the boot trace and the optimized, and never ran the program again until today. i feel like i'm cheating on these number. lol. i'm not.
29 seconds will be the boot time that measured from the time the power switch is pressed to the display of the desktop shortcuts. it's from around 24.50 seconds of the above boot trace plus 3-5 seconds of the time spent by the BIOS POST and the NT loader, these two boot times is measured by hand timing or like counting 1,2,3,.. these boot screens takes about 1 second each and this because they can not be measured by kernel instrumentation since the kernel is not running at that time.
and it'll take 34 seconds (or less)... from the power switch is pressed to a useable state,
(the tmpfw.exe is the last startup item/program that loads at boot time. see pic below)
Quote:
Taken from the "Fast System Startup for PCs Running Windows.doc" (fastboot-winxp.exe)
Windows XP Boot Activity Summary
1. Disk time is the time to enumerate all the devices in the non-page able device path. This is everything from the CPU to the boot disk drive; multiple IDE devices and slow IDE devices can affect this time. Typical disk time in Windows XP is 2 seconds, which is 4 times faster than Windows 2000.
2. Driver time is the time to initialize devices.
3. Prefetching time is the time spent reading pages in from disk used later as devices initialize, and Winlogon, services, the shell, and other applications start during boot.
4. Registry+Page file is time spent to read the registry and initialize the page file.
5. Video is the time spent as the display mode is set for the final resolution and refresh rate. Video driver and Video BIOS affect this time.
6. Logon+Services and Shell are the times to start Winlogon, services, the shell, and so on. This is mostly the operating system. However, value added components such as anti-virus software can effect this time.

Weird. I just checked mine, it takes 46 seconds (from power-button to login-box.) Progress bar makes just less than 3 full passes.
I have the same CPU and mobo as you have you turned off everything you don't need in the BIOS?

If you don't use raid turn it off. At least you should be able to. And it will save you on windows drivers(memory) and boot times. I have SATA-RAID and ATA-RAID I only use the ATA-RAID for a DVD-ROM drive(not normally used) of mine so I turn SATA-RAID off.
I think it takes me about 1-2mins to boot up. But then again I have alot of stuff to load on bootup. My fault I and there is nothing I don't want loaded.

i've let the bootvis.exe did the next boot trace for 10 times, then did an optimize once on the same system, the overall boot time and startup program times are about the same. but i think i see some improvements in the boot screen.. i don't see the progress bar since i use a different boot.ini than yours, but i will see about 4-6 boot screens, the BIOS POST is very fast, it's about one sec., then drivers ->Windows version and Ram info ->check disk screen ->Windows is starting.. ->loading personal settings ->Desktop. these boot screens are really fast, like a big gif image with 1 sec. interval between frames

Yeah I don't think you can turn off the VIA. I'm using the Promise controller, too . . . in regular IDE mode though.
But other than the initial POST screen, and the Promise detection screen, the mobo doesn't display any other screens with me.

re
I use Diskeeper Latest version , and i use the bootime defragmentation.
It sets all startup data close toghether, in my case the boot time increase dramaticly.
Also remove ,as discribe above, remove unnessasery to prevent starting up some un used
Services, including the nVidia Helper service.
Warning before using the boot time defragmenter make a check point.
Give it a try.
