Is This An SP2 Problem ????
My daughter recently came home from her first semester at college, and her new computer that was working so well when she went to college in August , was running so slow when she brought it back home in December. Even though I had an up to date anti-virus and on it, she managed to pick up some virus's. She had all kinds of other crap on it too. After a couple of days of trying to fix the computer, I gave up and reformatted the HDD and reloaded a fresh copy of XP home on her computer. Right after installing XPHome, I added SP2 from a disk that I had ordered from Microsoft. My daughter had two optical drives on her computer, a DVD player and a CD-RW burner. The DVD player is set as master and the burner is set as slave on the Secondary IDE channel. At the moment my daughter is unable to burn any cds. Windows is showing the DVD player, but the burner is listed as a cd-rom. Could this be happening because I've SP2 to her computer? How do I get Windows to recognise the burner? Any help would be appreciated.

I'd look on the CD-RW manufacturer's site and see if there is a firmware update.

Open up the Device Manager (Start ->Run ->devmgmt.msc),
click the + sign in front of the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers,
R-click on the level below that (the master storage controller, the one 'above' the Primary IDE Channel) and select "Uninstall", then reboot you PC when asked.
the XP PnP start over for the devices again, then you'll probably get a popup dialog that says "System Settings Change.. Windows has finished installing new devices..." and it asks you to reboot, click Yes, to reboot one more time. and see if this helps. and pls post back.

Thanks for the replys, fellows. My daughter is using Nero 5.5 on her computer at the moment. I'm d/ling the latest update for her version of Nero now.
To Ctrl-Alt-Del
I tried following your instruction, but after opening the line in the Device Manager, this is what I see.
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers
Primary IDE Channel
Secondary IDE Channel
SIS PCI IDE Channel
I cannot find any listing for master storage controller to delete it.

sorry about that, i was looking at different controllers at the time.
use the Add/Remove to remove the burning software first,
then go to the Device Manager, and "Uninstall" the drives itself,
expands the node "DVD/CD-ROM drives" by clicking the + sign in front of it,
then select Uninstall on the action context menu, on both the CD and DVD drives,
click OK to confirm that you want to remove it,
then go to the "Action" menu and select "Scan for hardware changes." and see..
if this does not help, try redoing these steps but this time close the Device Manager without running the Scan for hardware changes, but to reboot your PC and see..

if the problem still persist,
and after doing the uninstall/reinstall or even an upgrading on the burning software. neither updating the mainboard chipset/IDE driver nor the firmware for the CD-RW drive. could not help...
then remove the software one more time, then redo those steps in the Device Manager to "uninstall" both CD drives,
then quit the Device Manager and "turn off" and unplug your PC...,
then open the case, recabling and reset the jumpers on both drives,
replace the CD-RW drive as master.. and see.
if this helps.., reinstall the burning software and see..
if it's still, none of the above can help,
check this article.. CD-R Drive or CD-RW Drive Is Not Recognized As a Recordable Device - http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316529

I tried all suggestions, even followed the directions from Microsoft, and nothing helped. I finally have come to the conclusion that this opterite burner is defunct. I'll be replacing it on Monday for my daughter with another one, probably a Lite-On burner.

You might be experiencing a conflict between Nero and the Windows CD-Burning service. Go to start->run, type "services.msc", scroll down to "IMAPI CD-Burning COM Service" and stop it and set its startup type to disabled
