Windows Taskbar Puzzle
I'm using the latest SP2 Beta (2082). But, I believe this starting happening prior to installing this and I was using SP2 Beta (2055).
The 'this' that is happening is that my Taskbar, which is normally set to be hidden during active use, will be showing after I'm away from the computer for awhile. It just reappears and then takes several seconds...up to 30 seconds or so....to disappear once I start using the computer again.
I've tried googling this without any hits on this particular situation. Anyone else getting this....and knows a fix for it?
Thanks

Other than the 'Quick Launch' toolbar, Have you added any other toolbars or any adds on from 3rd party program to the taskbar?
i'd try to restore the taskbar's registry to its default, then set it to auto-hide again and see. but the default registry that i have is the XP RTM/SP1 ones, i'll know if it's the same only when i see your registry.
----------
i believe there wont be anything about this yet, not from searching on the net,
let wait from any response you may have from member here,
if there's none or no prob to the others i'd say the cause of the prob is a small corrupt registry. and if you like to know about it fast you can try to post your question here - http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=e...p.beta.general
there's a guy from MS on there at most of the time, he'll answer if this's a known issue of the 2082 build.

Whether SP2 Beta has installed something, it's hard to say what might causing this. I can't think of any 3rd party programs I've installed though.

i meant any 3rd party that add some functions on your Taskbar or maybe System tray like programs that helps grouping your system tray icons.. or additional address bars added on the Taskbar by 3rd party...
or even the animated icon from any programs that incompatible with this build could be the caused of this prob...
if any, then those programs need to be removed.

I would check with betaplace's forums and see if this is an issue with the SP2 beta's.

Ahhh....OK.....I think I know 'what's' doing it.....Now I need to find out 'why'.
I was sitting here talking to my son when the Taskbar popped up all by itself again. I pointed it out to my son and he said this has been happening on his XP machine, too. He has only the SP1 official stuff on his.
So, on a hunch, I opened my firewall program and immediately was met with a Warning and a trace to:
24.164.42.43
This originates in Tampa Bay area of FL.
Checking out the Warning Log I saw this:
Blocked Newtear Attack! which was associated with the above IP address.
Apparently, our firewall is presently configured in a way that causes the taskbar to come up when something like this happens.

Does your firewall give you an indication via the taskbar about an attack and/or warning?

you're not only test the XP's SP you're testing others softwares installed on your PC as well, maybe most of it works just fine maybe.. atleast i'd make sure that both AV and FW are working correctly..

Originally, I had it setup to pop up a whole window when there was a warning. If anyone here knows how that works, they'll know why I disabled that feature.

I've had this D-Link for maybe 5 years or so. It's a black case one.
As for getting the Taskbar to pop up.....that part's still a mystery. I haven't made any particular changes knowingly that would result in this.
As an update to the NewTear attack, another one happened only a few moments ago. Doing a visual trace of the nodes involved, a WHOLE LOT of the intermediate nodes are registered to America Online. (Why does that not surprise me?)
