Weird XP Problem
Ok i got this dell computer from a friend, and its not to bad i figured ill use it as a server. Here is the problem the OS is screwed. I went to boot into windows and thats a no go. So i tryed safe mode. Again a no go. Its hanging at mup.sys. Anyone know what this is? Or why it would hang? So i was like ok ill just reinstall XP, so i put in the XP cd in it boots fine, but it hangs at the part were it says Installtion is starting windows...I know the cd is fine as i just used it!
Right now im stumped! As far as i can tell the hardware is all fine, and there is only one PCI card installed. Ill try removing that today and see if that helps. But any ideas would be great. The specs that i know of.

when you had the mup.sys error, that could be some drivers probs.
but now with the new installation hung, you'll have to try removing the PCI card and see, if still you cant install XP, i'd say, check your hardwares for any incompatible with XP, and the bios updates if poss..

Re: Weird XP Problem
I'm a little confused.. the computer you're trying to install Windows on is a Dell that's not working right? If that's the case, then I think your specs are wrong.. Dell only uses Intel processors.
That aside, I had a similar problem installing Windows once on my computer. Anytime it got to the graphical part of the installation, the computer would just restart. I could start in safe mode, and it would give me a "Windows has recovered from a serious error" (or something), and it pointed at the video driver as the cause. The only way I was able to install Windows was by making an unattended installation CD with updated video drivers on it.
I'm not sure that you're having the same problem I had, though..

dell did have some athlon systems.. .didn't they?
BTW.. one of the major deciding factors for all the OEM's to dump Athlons... is due to them requiring alot of juice....
i've seen nearly all of the oem build athlons system that i've worked on.. come in fried ... or PSU fried...
i just recently had a PSU fire due to over used

I'll suggest that you check the RAM of your rig. Windows Xp is acting strange when RAM is not good (sorry for my english )

I'm gonna second the RAM check...If your RAM is corrupt then this icould be a culprit.
Worst case:
If I'm not mistaken though, I think the MUP.SYS file is related to a motherboard/CPU conflict...I think indicating that either one or the other has crapped out...scientific term.
Oh and I'm pretty certain 99.9% certain that DELL only uses Intel processors as someone else stated above...we may have a mix-n-match PC here, with incompatible components?
