Windows XP Pro -- POPUPS Galore!!!
My younger son asked me to look at one of his computers that quit working. I brought it home and put a spare PSU in it. That's all that was wrong as far as it not starting up.
BUT, when I put that thing on the local network and checked for updates....YIKES!!!! This thing gets popups one right after the other. AND, it gets them even with Messenger disabled in the Services AND even without a browser open.
I could never stand to work on a computer that does this.
I'm currently scanning it for virus/worm infection and so far it hasn't detected anything.
I even activated the built-in firewall and it still does this.
Maybe someone could give me a tip what to do next. This is really buggin' me.

He actually has a popup blocker on that system. But, it very apparently isn't doing the job.

That probably just checks for browser-initiated pop-ups, I don't think it would stop the ones from adware like GAIN, etc.

According to Ad-Aware.... 176 Items to be exact!
He sent me a message awhile ago saying that when he had this in his dorm room, his room mate and friends were dld'ing all kinds of crap.

run the adaware and spybot search and destroy they both find different things, also run a program called spyblaster located here:
SpyBlaster
This one stops the spyware from even being installed.
Hope this helps.

Sheesh, I guess I do not need to post up my guide. It will be an official DH guide shortly. I just gotta redo it a little.

So far the Ad Aware proggie seems to have put things under control. I was able to return the computer to him today with a used PSU I found lying on a shelf in another closet. I'd forgotten about putting it in there and it's exactly what he needs for that system.
He's thrilled to have it back.
