CHKDSK killed my Windows XP (Me is sad)
Ok, my system was acting strange with USB mouse not working unless I unplug and replug.. So I decided to run a scandisk. I rebooted the system and it does it's usual business. Check disk finishes reboots and then tries to access windows... But then reboots again. Ok, I can handle that. I'll just format the windows partition and install windows. I do that, but not after juggling 3 versions of the VIA RAID drivers (latest from VIA didn't work for me) ASUS latest and ASUS CD versions worked, but then as soon as all the files are copied over and the system reboots for installation process to begin I get a BSOD. Frustrated, I do it again and again while juggling out RAM etc.. Everything was working fine til I used CHKDSK.
Quick reference:
P4P800 Deluxe
2.4B @ 3.29 GHz (This is stable, I just tested the stability the night before)
1024 MB (512 MB x 2) Crucial PC2700
Maxtor Diamond Max 9 2 x 60 GB with RAID 0
Antec 430w TruePower
I also used my unattended CD which works.. I've tested it.
I'm gonna do a retest on the CD and do a physical cleaning of the case and stuff~...Just to make sure things have gone crappy on me.
If anybody has any clue as to why this is happening.. Don't hesitate to post

It is sounding like your Hard Drive(s) may be failing. Chkdsk finds an error and deletes or moves something and it happens to be a sysem file (Happened to me before).

Damn~
If that's true then..I've gone through 3 or 4 HDDs within a year. WTF.. With 2 different Mobos too. CHKDSK didn't delete any files though, no errors were found. I've seen when CHKDSK fixes stuff, it reports it. Thanks for the hasty response ZeroDamage, much appreciated. I'm really hoping it's not my HDDs..but if it is..there's an excuse to go SATA..

This happend to me lately too,old computer(gen.Intel zx400) was runnin good before, had to reinstall because of planting a new graphic card, installed with my w2k cd, and had the same problems as you describes
thinking my CD-rom was not good changed it with an w98 cd, still problems
Well to make a short story longer,
problem was in the memory.. swapped the 2sticks around in another slot and voila...no problem anymore.

I suspected the memory as well. I did remove one stick and move it over to another PC for testing purposes. I must have done something wrong or some dust got into the DIMM while it was empty. Like I said I'll be doing a thorough cleaning of that area.
Know what's funny? I posted this at ABXZone and DH, both forums are giving different answers.

This is gonna sound crazy but I used own a MSI K7N2 which was notourious for usb losing connectivity, anytime it happend I shut down the system pop in my Redhat Linux installation cd and boot from it and I just and wait until the linux installation program detected my usb ports I took out my linux cd restarted the system and guess what my usb is back, but when i tried the same thing with a win xp cd it was a no go it had to be linux cd, I think what it was is that linux and windows detect usb diffrently. Go figure

Well I've been a computer tech for over 10 years, and I am going from experience. I bet many responses are people saying "It is Microsoft, they suck, stupid chkdsk and gates, the devil, blah blah"
It is hard sometimes to say what it could be without looking at it. So I am basing it on what I've seen before. I am saying first your HD. Then I would think maybe it is your RAM. If that doens't fly, maybe it is your mobo or something with the bios. There are many possibilities here

you've had 2 occurring probs there... 1st one was you received fatal errors after running chkdsk... 2nd one was during/beginning the installation process.
a BSOD at the installation process... RAM is the cause of this prob at most of the time..
But i'm not sure with the one after running chkdsk.
i cant do this by guessing... what was exact error code and description?

Another important note
XP appears to look for my viaraid.sys and viaraid.inf files in the XP CD but it's not there. It's on diskette..

i got the below from a quick read...
Quote:
This error indicates that the driver is attempting to locate a critical
portion of itself which is not where it expects it. For instance, lets say
that I have a file called "myfile.sys" and my installation drivers expect
to find this file on an installation path on my driver disk of
\driver\myfile and either the path \driver\myfile does not exist or the
needed component "myfile.sys" does not exist in \driver\myfile then it will
fail. This is a problem in the driver and its installation routines. You need to
discuss this with the hardware manufacturer to determine what it is looking
for and why it is not there.

and i just spotted this..

2 of them were just WDs
I purchased a WD 60 GB and it failed on me after I noticed some clicking. The place I got it from replaced it with a "refurbed" WD 60 GB and it died. And well the other 2 would be my Maxtors if these were the culprits for the installation errors. I looked at the MS KB and I'm trying to get the drivers into the installation. Thanks for the help. I'll keep updating here.

Peculiar
When I reach the partitioning screen the PC just sits there when I use the USB Keyboard, I plug in my PS/2 and it goes without a hitch. Odd...

What mouse do you have? I've experienced with some machines that simply refuse to boot at all if I have a cheapo USB Memorex mouse that I have lying around. It also has that weird isse of not working until disconnecting and reconecting it a few times.

Just for my own curiosity, do you use Memtest86 to test your config after changes or problems?

No, but I should. I haven't actually used the program before, I heard it was really usefull for testing for memory errors, though. I'll use it eventually.
