Installing Windows from somewhere other than CD
Just picked up an old NT server box with Dual Pentium Pro 200's in it. I cannot boot from the CD-Rom, is there some other way to do this? Like get a win 98 boot disk and run from there right?

First of what CD are you trying to boot from? Second check in the BIOS. You should be able to set the boot order. Set it for CDROM, Floppy, Hard Drive 0.

Boot using a Win98 boot disk or cd.
You have two options.
Boot with 98 cdrom you get cd access
go to X:\win98\smartdrv 4096 (this will make you a cache in ram for the HD will make OS installation much faster as well as copying files to hd)
swap the cd for win2k then go to cd and run X:\i386\winnt.exe
or copy the entire X:\i386 to your hd
ie
C:\md i386
c:\ cd i386
c:\i386\copy X:\i386\*.*
Yes to all
c:\i386\winnt.exe
winnt.exe starts the Instal of OS

With windows 2000 you will need to create the 4 boot floppies in order to boot to the CD. If you have a PC that is up and running, put the 2000 disk into that PC and do a explore of the 2000 CD. You will find a folder called BOOTDISK. In there run the MAKEBT32.EXE and follow what it says. It will make 4 boot up floppies. Use these with the CD and you will be good to go. This is how we do some of the old systems at work and it works great. A little slow but it is better then nothing. You can try with the 98 boot disk but that usually does not work with 2000. You will more then likely have to make the 4 boot floppies.

Or you can boot of a win987 floopy that will give you cdrom access. I kinda missed the I can't boot from cdrom Doh.. Any who or boot with your current os and copy the i386 dir and reboot (shutdown) into dos. I personally hate the 4 floppies cause I can never find 4 good floppies.

The neat thing I have been experimenting with here at work is booting from a USB key drive. They do sell key drives that you can do this but I have been working with a regular key drive. Doesn't always work but I am working on it. The only thing you need is a Mobo that allows you to boot from a USB device. When I get it work consistantly I will post here what I did. No more searching for good floppies

The CD is one of those tray/cassette old thingies. Seriously antiquated, I don't know if I have a decent CD-rom to replace it with, I'm afraid I may need proprietary drivers for it. I'll have to give the win2000 disks a shot I think.
