the error message will tell us or may narrow down what's actually cause the prob. next time write it down or someting. then we can help you pin point it.
as for Win Updates, if you're running XP, for time saving you can use the Update Rollup 1 for Windows XP, more info and d/l at.. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939

How much free space is left on the HD?
Have you run the Error Checking app for errors? (To do so, just open My Computer to see your HD. Right click on the HD and select Properties. Now, select the Tools tab. Error-checking is the first option on the next screen. Select the Check Now button. However, you likely won't be able to actually get it to function until you choose to do it when you reboot the computer. Upon a reboot, the disk check will function and look for errors. Be sure you allow it to correct problems it finds.)
Once you done the Error-checking, it might be time for a Defrag. That's on the same screen as the Error-checking.
Good luck!

some older Win Updates file used to cause slow down on some XP system, but not anymore as far as i know. it makes no sense to try to tweak an OS that's fundamentally incomplete or broken. So, before you start changing anything, you must ensure all your software including the OS itself and hardware are all set up and running properly.
Open System Properties -> Startup and Recovery,
at Setting, remove the check marked from "Automatic restart"
and pls give us info of the STOP Error code and message, exactly what did it say??

for the "nt-scanner", thiss the main prob that caused the slow down.
what kind of anti-virus software was installed on the system?? McAfee?? or Norton??, any system/file utilities installed??
as for the "System Has Recovered from a Serious Error" message,
the prob is mostly caused by a corrupted System Restore feature or the pagefile.sys. try fixing it and see if it helps.
1) to fix the System Restore feature...
Open Control Panel -> System,
Select the System Restore tab -> Check the Turn off System Restore box
Press OK and press Yes to confirm and Reboot your PC.
On this startup, you may still receive the system has recovered from a serious problem message. Now, go back there and -> Uncheck the Turn off System Restore box,
Reboot your PC again.. see if it helps.
2) use the workaround method (by recreating the pagefile) you see on this...
http://support.microsoft.com/default...;EN-US;q317277 to recreate the pagefile.sys.

okay thats what i thought and it's the main prob that caused error "windows can't load nt-scanne"
i suggest you to boot the PC using the XP CD direct, entering Setup and select to Delete the current partition options and make a new RAW one to be formatted and go on with the installation.
Then do the updates things (drivers and Win Updates).
if you like those products..., you still have to choose among them and only pick one of the combination to be installed.
Norton firewall and norton antivirus
-or-
Mcafee firewall and mcafee antivirus
-or-
ZAP and Norton antivirus (or Mcafee antivirus)
Now, let say you follow my words and the system runs fine, no memory probs.. no locks up or anything. Do a good back up of your system like making an image of the whole system. and then you can try to use/install 2 or more firewall/antivirus on the same system and see if it happens again. if not, then you're okay... Good Luck!

Great Firewall of China
Hmm, didn't I read somewhere that you are supposed to run even numbers of firewall products?
Try installing a fourth!

question,l have 3 firewall and 2 antivirus on another system,also xp,it runs fine.there is a problem that happened before that and might be part of why its giving me nt-scanner stuff,when l formatted my harddrive l installed 98se ,loaded up drivers,then l conected my second hardrive,then l upgraded to xp,l put xp on second hardriveby accident,as l usually don't conect second hardrive till l have xp installed,but this timel gorgot l did,and it went on second hardrive ,when pc rebooted l saw two operating systems on 2 diifernt hardrives,so rebooted second time in 98 and deleted xp on second hardrive ,shutdown system ,disconected second dardrive ,rebooted,installed xp on 98 ,now when it reboots,it shows xp windows on black screen,and asks me to pick.could this be my problem.if so how can l sort it out?????????????????????

i'd say you knew what you was doing on that system and you're good at it.
but it's just not happening on this system.

NT On-Access Scanner is part of McAfee's products,
pls contact McAfee and give them the info about having Norton and ZAP on the same system and see how the supports will say, i'd say they'll tell you to remove the others in order to fix the prob or you may find a better solutions from them.
Why upgrade installation?
the ideal situation is a clean install of XP on a freshly formatted NTFS or FAT32 volume.

NTFS is superior to FAT32 in terms of reliability, security, and efficiency.
for gaming i'm not sure and whats exactly should i recommend, also whether or not you like to setup a dual boot system, if so, then compatiblity is a concern, you may want to use FAT32 for any local drives you want to access if you boot the system using win9x.

i suggest you to make an XP custom boot disk. just incase you cant do a regular boot so you can use this floppy disk to boot XP... so do it now when you can!
format a floppy within the CMD window (Start/Run/cmd)
put a floppy disk in drive and using this command "format a: /u" (no "" when typing)
then make a custom boot.ini file from below and place the file along with NTLDR, NTDETECT (files off your C:\ or the system drive) in the formatted disk.
how to make a custom boot.ini--> open notepad and copy/paste the below in it and save the file as boot.ini
Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=-1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, first partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, second partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, third partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, fourth partition" /sos
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:\"

make sure this will be in one line (No Wrap) and no empty space in front of the line
Code:
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
----------------------------------
here's more info about this XP custom boot disk (not for XP installation - use it for booting only)
Quote:
how to guard against a situation when it is not possible to start Windows or any other operating system on your computer. This situation can occur when the boot record for the active partition or files that are required to start Windows becomes corrupted
To guard against this situation, create a WinXP boot disk when you first install Windows on the computer. This boot disk contains only the files that are necessary to start the OS with the remainder of the Windows system files installed on the hard disk drive.
Use the following procedure to create this disk:
Place a blank floppy disk in drive A, and format the disk by using Windows XP.
From the root folder of the system partition of your hard disk drive (for example, C:\-), copy the following files to the floppy disk:
Boot.ini
NTLDR
Ntdetect.com
You may have to remove the hidden, system, and read-only attributes from the files.
Restore the hidden, system, and read-only attributes to the files on your hard disk if you removed these attributes.
If either the Bootsect.dos or the Ntbootdd.sys file resides in the system partition, also use the procedure that is described in steps 2 through 4 to copy these files to the boot disk.
If you format a floppy disk in Windows XP, the boot record points to the NTLDR file. When NTLDR runs, it loads the available operating system selections from the Boot.ini file. If you select Windows, NTLDR runs Ntdetect.com, and then passes control to Osloader.exe. If you select MS-DOS or OS/2, NTLDR loads Bootsect.dos.
|
and here's the boot.ini file for 2 HDDs systems or having XP on the 2nd HDD.
(for the custom made boot disk only)
Code:
[boot loader]
timeout=-1
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, first partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, second partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, third partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="NT, First harddisk, fourth partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="NT, Second harddisk, first partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(2)\WINDOWS="NT, Second harddisk, second partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(3)\WINDOWS="NT, Second harddisk, third partition" /sos
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(4)\WINDOWS="NT, Second harddisk, fourth partition" /sos
C:\="Previous Operating System on C:\"

okay, maybe you dont understand what i was trying...
go to Start ->Run, and type in.. msconfig
the command will open "System Configuration Utility",
click on the tab BOOT.INI and take a screen shot, and post it here.
