XP folder setting Memory? HELP!

I'm having a problem with a couple of folders (games, utilities) on desktop resetting to list view all the time. I prefer those particular folders to be in icon view. The problem arises mainly when I go through explorer to access stuff that is stored away. I guess I hit the 999 folder mark and all previous settings are reset.

Now, I set the preference in TweakUI to 999, but trying to set it any higher results in the setting defaulting back to 400.

Is there a registry setting I can change to make WinXP remember something like 3000+ folders? If so, where? I DO realise that it will cause Windows to use more memory or whatever, but I don't care. I'm tired of setting those folders all the time.

Thanks.

EDIT: BTW, thanks to everyone who suggested Mozilla as an alternate browser, it's working out nicely.

After much searching, I think I finally came up with the correct search criteria to find my answer:

To increase the number of folder settings WindowsXP remembers (it defaults to 400):

1. Start the Registry Editor
2. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ Shell \
3. Right-click an empty space in the right pane and select New > DWORD Value
4. Name the new value BagMRU Size
5. Double-click the BagMRU Size value, and set the Base to Decimal
6. Now in the Value data field enter the number of folders for which Windows should remember the settings (I'd suggest 1,000 or more)
7. Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ ShellNoRoam \
8. Repeat steps 3-6
9. Close the registry editor

Rayder, I'm just curious. After you have changed the Registry values for those 2 keys, did the annoying folder memory reset go away??

Yeah, actually, the settings were already there from TweakUI, but I altered them to 4000 from the 999 that TweakUI would max out at.

So far, they seem to be holding, but I haven't went through a bunch of folders in my storage drive yet to see if they reset the ones I have on desktop.

Let me test now.......

PFFT.....they still reset. MAN! is that annoying or what?

I'm thinking that you can set that value to anything you want and it only sees the first 3 numbers. My next test will be a freakin' 9999 setting. But I soubt it will be any different than just setting it to 999, at least that's what it's seeming like.

I suppose I should just get used to looking at them in list view, but you know, I want it the way I want it.

ARG!

Rayder, how many folder cache settings do you want to increase?
....2000, 3000, 4000, 5000 or 8000 folders.

i'll try to come up with some steps for you to save folder views settings and you can try it on.

Okay, the below steps dont require the number of the folders.
try it on just dont forget to export all the reg keys before deleting/modifying.

( HKCU = HKEY_CURRENT_USER )

1st,.. Open the Run.. box (start ->run) and type in.. regedit
and hit enter key. the command will open the Registry Editor,
Locate the following...

1) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell
2) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

in right pane window of each key (i.e. Shell and ShellNoRoam),
Create or Modify the DWORD value name "BagMRU Size", and enter the value of folders that you want in Value data field (in Decimal). note-- use Decimal when applying this tweak manually,
use Hexadecimal value if you like to apply it by using a .REG file.

Next, in the Registry Editor, Locate the following...
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Pol icies\Explorer
in the right pane window, Modify the DWORD value for the value name "NoSaveSettings"....
from 1 to 0 (=dword:00000000)

Final, Locate...
1) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
2) HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags

Then R-click on each one (i.e. BagMRU and Bags) and select Delete to get rid of both of them.

Once you've done all the above, Reboot your PC and set up each of your folders as you like it. These settings should now be saved and restored on the next reboot. By deleting the registry entries metioned Windows is forced to recreate them and in doing so get rid of corruption and bad entries.

all of it in Registry Editor should take 1-2 mins of your time. hope that helps you.

Thanks panging, I've done what you said. Will report if it worked.....

EDIT: So far, so good!!! After doing the settings and rebooting, I quickly went through all the folders in my storage drive ; patches (loads of them) Jukebox, drivers...etc. Go back to desktop and the folders are all still in my preferred icon view!!!

I set the folder memory to 9999.

By George!! I think we've got it!!

I'm gonna have to do that to the other 2 XP PC's in the house.

Thanks again panging, you da man!

DOH!! Sorry about putting it in the wrong forum, I somehow missed the fact that there was one for Windows issues.
