Damit all
Some might remeber that damn Q811493 hot fix awhile back. Well, originally was having horrific download sppeds with my cable modem, and then was told by some cool dude here to delete it. Well after that all was fine again. Well just recently, MS said that i needed this patch to fix a security hole, so being skeptic i asked if it was needed or not, i was told that the version was updated since the last one and those problems are gone. So i downloaded the patch once again, and all seemed allright, well in the last few days, all has begun to download slow again, called up my cable provider, all was fine, yet ran some speed tests and it confirmed that things were not well, so I just assumed it was the cable company laying bs down. So just today, I wanted to try something after it took 30 seconds to load this page up, was to uninstall that patch. Well that being done, im back at lightning speed, at all tests, at all page loads and downloads.
So I ask, what in the motha of all hell is up with this damn Q811493. Im being told I need it, yet it sucks ass to what it does. So now internet works great again, yet now im vulnerable to hackers, thats Microsoft you freaking idiots.....

Have you ever tried disabling your antivirus software to see if the speed picks back up?

Thanks for the reply. And yes I have shut down all background programs and all unneccesary services in an attempt to correct this. Necrosis not only has this patch caused a huge interent slowdown, but the entire comp feels sluggish, and no matter what attemts i make to shut down background programs or what not, the only way it all goes away is when I remove that Hotfix. Then and only then, pages load like they should, and the computer doesnt move like its in quicksand. Yet even now comp is working great again, but im still concerned on the vulnerabilty it now says i have.

if you don't want to install the hotfix... i suggest a good router or some sort with firewall built in.... this will give you some good protection... and won't hinder your speed...

I had the problem as well but since they "fixed" it my system hasn't had any slow downs because of it.

Hmmm.Interesting...Now its a matter if its important enough to do the same and restore system or not. Im kinda obsessed on having all the newest stuff, so not having that patch as weird as it sounds is killing me. i always find stuiped reasons to restore comp, question is if this is one of them..

Depending on how many driver updates and software updates i have available for my computer..... i'll reformat and cleanly install windows... This is the best solution which guarantees a clean and working os... not to mention the max preformance..ENLESS something goes terribly wrong or one driver that was "latest" ends up with a serious bug..... in which case....i like to wait a good week or 2 before downloading and install from scratch just to get some overall feedback....

So you think I should just try a reinstal of os, or do a complete format.
Is there a target folder that i could delete the older residual patch if it still exists, sorta like the Driver cleaner we use for our graphic cards....

if you gonna reinstall you windows.. i'd reccomend reformationg... it run alot better... just reinstalling can still leave isses /files behind... i have allways just did a quick format...(not a full format becouse its alot slower unles you really feel the need to have your hdd rechecked for errors) just to wipe ot ahytrhing that could be left... not mention if its been long since you last installed you notice a nice little speed increse it it said that "windows leaves more junk behind than NASA"

Yeah im thinking it may be time, ill start backing up some critical stuff on cd, and soon i think im gonna do it. Just for the peace of mind, only thing i hate is that i ll have to call MS for a new key. ive done so much stuff thus far, from Graphic cards, to HD, mobo, etc that it doesnt reconize the original cd key. Oh well.....

How long does it take to get a new key? I'm going to reinstall my mom's XP home ed. in a few weeks. I wonder if there is going to be a problem when I try to activate it?

It doesnt take too long, and it may not ask you to call either. the guy told me on the other end of the phone that this has gotta ouuta control, that they planned on this happening onlt to MAJOR upgrades, such as MOBO AND CPU. yet they are hiring more people, because its doing it for peopel just replacing a sound card, or a graphics card. So he said it has not gone the way they expected it to. So, for me and my first upgrade to a new p4 chip, it asked me to call, once I got there it was an automated phone thing, which on your screen will have a serial number, which you then put in the phone, 4 characters at a time, then when your done it issues you a new key to put in. I tried this way 3 or 4 times and there alwasy was an error, so i wound up actualy talking to this dude, who then told me whay this is happening. So its a hit and miss thing, it was designed for MAJOR hardware upgrades to have to get a new key, not for Minor ones, so whether or not youll have to or not is a shot in the dark. I for one, if i reformat at all these days I have to call, whether or not i upgrade, guess they think im using this os on multiple comps or something.
So good luck, if ya have to there will be a toll free number to call, and all info they ask will be right on your monitor. Good luck to you .......
