Outlook Long Time

Anyone know why Outlook takes forever to startup in my XP installation. I had this problem before where I told GPEDIT.MSC not to start messenger automatically. This has the effect of slowing outlook (express) right down to where it can take anything up to 2 minutes to load. The outlook 6 splash screen appears but stays there until outlook eventually opens. This time round though, gpedit hasn't had that option turned on.

Any ideas cos' its got me stumped.

if "Contacts" pane at below of OE 6's windows is enabled, try to close it and re-open the OE again and see if any better by doing that!

Logla,

I had this problem after installing McAfee VirusScan. Do you also have a Virus Protection program installed?

I use Outlook 2000, and OE 6 might have some of the same options. Here's how I had to fix my very slow startup of O2K:

Open Outlook.
Go to Tools and select Options.
Click the Other tab.
Click the Advanced Options button.
Click the Add-in Manager.

Uncheck anything with Virusxxxx in the line.

You might even see something else there that is suspicious. If so, uncheck it/them to see if it helps get OE up and running faster again.

Good luck!

Thanks for that Dyre,

That didn't work but shutting the AV console and scanner down seemed to do the trick. All my mail is vetted through a 3rd party pop3 client before I open outlook and If I have anything with attachments, I can start the scanner again before doing send/recieve.

thanks again.

You bet!

I know how annoying it is to count the hourglass cycles while waiting for a program to load.

Glad you got it sorted out.

Not just 'in effect' -- it will disable it. You'll have to decide whether you want your email program to load faster....or, let it load slowly and leave it running almost constantly to avoid such a delay.

FWIW: These instructions were given directly to me by McAfee Support Staff in response to my own Online Live Support request a couple weeks ago.

What I do is Disable all the Preview Screens in Outlook......at least the Inbox and Deleted emails option. It's no good to disable the Preview in the Inbox only to have the Preview active in the Delete section where you review what you want to trash completely.

when you're not completely remove messenger but to disable it in GPEDIT.MSC... sometime it'll make the OE slow in starting up... there's a small fix in registry but my OE's registry is not original so that i cant produce any of it for you... looking for the right fix on internet, you'll find one for sure.

add..
this is not supposed to be a work-around issue.. its a fix should be avail since this problem and XP been out for so long already!

edit-- add info

I do start the av software back up once outlook has loaded but before I perform send/recieve.

Surely this doesn't mean the AV is disabled. Does it?
