2000 v. XP
What is so great about XP? As I understand it, 2000 and XP are almost the same. But, some people insist XP is far better
I recently got Windows 2000, so can someone please fill me in?
(And please don't mention the new Luna GUI . . . If I had XP, that'd be the first thing to be turned off )

I did about a week of testing the 2 OSes and came to the conclusion that windows2k is slightly faster. I tested both optimized versions of the OS and stock configurations. 2k is also more stable, but both were able to escape from crashes (by going to the task manager and killing all active apps) with about the same success rate.

2000 is or was a little fastser but xp much be faster after the nice boost i goten from the srvice pack2 beta... xp has all the latest driver support, xp firewall (pro ver), the driver handeling and men\mory handleing is diffrent. xp has a lot of cool features/as well as tweakabilty... can be set up to do just about anything server etc.... 2000 is a bit week comare to the reliabilty of xp. not to mention the xp themes that are possalbe ... i could go on for hours ....
you talking to some one who has used win 3.1,3.11,widows NT, 95,98,98se,me,2000,xp,linux mandrake, redhat, mac os 8, mac os 9

If you guys have the sisoft sandra utillity, go to the foile system banchmark. You will see that there are two HDDs (120 GB both, 7200 rpm, 8 Mb cache) that when the filesystem is win2k the FileSystem score is 31000 (approximately) and when the filesystem is XP the score is 29000.
I think that this says it all.

XP is better! I don't care about the themes though. My XP os looks just like my other computer running 95.

True windows XP isn't all that great, i've used windows 2000 a long time, before XP got developed and distributed, and i can tell you there aint that much difference between the 2 OSes, but i just use XP to have the latest windows version on my pc, cause that is the version that will get the most updates and support in my opinion.
And about the themes, couldn't agree more, the first thing i do after a fresh install once in a while, i immediatly turn on windows classic mode.

I too prefer 2k. I don't care for the XP eye candy. I got XP at work but its setup to look like my 2k machine. If I want eye candy I will play a game :P

All this talk about not liking XP for its eye candy is quite an amusing point, you are aware that it can all be turned off/disabled? (i hate luna myself)
I have seen so many of these threads and sometimes ive gone into long winded replies but ill just reply with this.
Nt-2000-XP....... all the same NT code (which incidentally rocks IMO), just with continuing improved core kernal and driver support. If you are on 2000 there is no reason not to upgrade to XP/SP1 (unless you are running some server side software which has not be updated to support XP yet).

Uh, someone with a simple answer...
The Benifit of XP is that it's the latest, therefore, the latest games/software and hardware in general is now being optimized and tested and diagnosed for xp... AND COME ON, it's just SO much nicer and cleaner to use...

A stock WinXP installation is a nasty thing, but once tweaked the OS is very nice. I have to say that, in my experience, it is the best OS Microsoft has created. You are right in saying that Win2K and WinXP are related -- WinXP is sort of like a super Service Pack for Win2k. But its exhaustive driver support and vastly improved game support make WinXP the better OS, as far as I am concerned.

I agree, when you first install it, XP is freeking SLUG. Automatic this, system restore that. Indexing, and a bunch of other services that are huge memory hogs. But after you clean it up it is pretty good.

What do you mean, "need to be replaced or not" - I built my PC too- and windows never told me what to put in it- I don't understand.
