Backing up NTFS partitions
I need a program that can backup my main NTFS partition to an image on my second NTFS partition (same HDD)
We use Symantec Ghost at work, but its dos based and only works with FAT32. I can backup that partition to another disk but I don't have one
I like to have an fresh build image of my OS with no software installed, to save me having to go through the process of installing xp from scratch.
Pls help, Pls

what version of Ghost are you using? I do believe Ghost supports NTFS partions. There is also the option in Ghost to choose: partition to file and then you can save it to a file which can be put on the second partition. another thing is Acronis true image, it works from windows and it backup the partition in use to wherever you want --> http://www.acronis.com/products/trueimage/

I agree with patje, I use Norton Ghost 2003 and you can back up an image to an NTFS partition. Having said that, i back up my main drive which is NTFs to another partition which is FAT32 on my 2nd HD. Never tried backing up to NTFS partition as i prefer to back up to FAT32.
So either way you can still back up your OS partition.

Drive Image 2002 is good and handles NTFS (Ive used it for a while now and never had a problem), the new V7 even handles backing up to DVD media.
Last time I used ghost it didnt handle NTFS and needed to boot into DOS via a floppy disc for imaging (which was a pain as I hate floppies), but was it was faster than Drive image generally. I dont use Fat32 as its a terrible filing system, always was.
Drive image 2002 auto boots amazingly quick into DOS for imaging, but its slower than Ghost for the actual process itself. If Ghost can now handle NTFS its worth looking out for.

You can also have ghost 2003 burn directly to DVD or CD media even through USB 2.0
Tried it @ work and works great.
We even constructed a bootable CD which boots into dos, burns the partion to a dvd and it also makes the DVD bootable, so you can insert your DVD and restore it by booting from it.
you just gotta luv dos, altough i also hate floppies, but love bootable CD's

I've got ghost 7.5 but it refuses to recognise my second partition as a valid disk. I can seen the partition in ghost but when I try to actually write the image, it gives me an error about not being a valid partition.
I'm sure we've got a copy of PQDI lying around here somewhere so if I can find that I'll give it a try.

well i dont know whats wrong then.
may be you like to try PQDI or Norton Ghost 2003 Commercial version.
i've tried PQDI 7, had been used PQDI 6 and True Image 6.
now using Norton Ghost 2003.789... always store images in NTFS partitions
and i like to promote the Norton Ghost 2003 over another.

Just got home and tried again. No luck but I can clarify that when I run ghost (7.5 corp) I can see the partitions but cant see the drives. So if I try ghost partition to image, the only drives I see are a: and b: (my cd burner) no c: and no d:. I've tried just about every option in there, it just doesn't work.
