Shut down PC through network??
Is there any way to turn off (as in shut completely down) a PC on a home network from another PC on the network? We have PC's upstairs and downstairs and basically I am lazy and don't want to have to climb up and down stairs just to shut off a PC after I get whatever I needed off of it.
We have 1 98se machine and 3 XP home machines on the network currently.
This is one of those questions I've been meaning to ask, but always forget when I'm here.
Can it be done? If yes, how?
If no........bummer.

While I wouldn't recommend doing it all the time, if I were really lazy and desperate, I'd run a long extension cord and put it on an on/off device/switch at my location. That way you could even turn it ON from downstairs. It would just have to go through Scandisk when it boots up.

I can be done!
at least for the XP's i believe
here is how it goes:
Right click my computer, choose manage (computer management opens)
In the left column it says Computer Management (local)
Right click it and choose: Connect to another computer
Select your computer you wish to shut down
Right click (where it used to say computer managment (local)
Then you get the computer information
Goto the advanced tab and at the bottom choose Startup and Recovery
and click the mighty shutdown button.
There should be easier ways i guess but this one works.
Not sure if it'll work with your win98
Good luck lazy pal

There is a remote shutdown command in XP but when ever I try it, I get your are not authorised. If you get a working solution let me know, mean while I'll try some of the above solutions, except the extension cord

I tried a couple of those. I always got a 'not authorised' response. Oh, well. I guess I'll just have to continue do it the manual way.

One of these won't work? :
Usage:
SHUTDOWN [-i | -l | -s | -r | -a] [-f] [-m \\computername] [-t xx] [-c "comment"] [-d up x:yy]
No args Display this message (same as -?)
-i Display GUI interface, must be the first option
-l Log off (cannot be used with -m option)
-s Shutdown the computer
-r Shutdown and restart the computer
-a Abort a system shutdown
-m \\computername Remote computer to shutdown/restart/abort
-t xx Set timeout for shutdown to xx seconds
-c "comment" Shutdown comment (maximum of 127 characters)
-f Forces running applications to close without warning
-d [u][p] x:yy The reason code for the shutdown
u is the user code
p is a planned shutdown code
xx is the major reason code (positive integer less than 256)
yy is the minor reason code (positive integer less than 65536)
This mayor may not be off topic, But couldn't you creat a nice little shortcut to shutdown that remote computer, or your own?

I went through these steps on my own network. I'm running XP Home Ed. on the computer I'm using now and 98SE on another computer.
Going through these steps, when it gets to the screen where you choose the computer you want to take over, I click the Browse button and no other computer shows up. We actually have 4 computers on the LAN here. None but the XP machine shows up at all....even when I select the BROWSE option.

you'll have to make it worked 1st..
the easiest way(it may not be the safest.. but dont worry!) to remote shutdown/restart will be..
open "System Properties" ->Computer Name ->Network ID..
selecting the option ->This computer is part of a business network...
->My computer uses a network without domain ->Workgroup name: enter anything... or use defualt "WORKGROUP"
if you have already done.. do it again to all PCs in your networks
and then open run box and type in.. " lusrmgr.msc "
open "Users" / Guest Properties / at general tab, check "Password never expires" and remove all the rest.. at Member Of tab, add / advanced.. / find now / Administrators.
open "Groups" / Administrators Properties.. make sure you have "Guest" in member box.
all steps needed for all PCs.
all of remote shutdown tools that i've posted (above) should work now! let try it again and i'll add some more info later on.
for "Shutdown.exe" from win XP.. to restart a computer named "BWX232WINXP"
open run box and entering " shutdown -r -m BWX232WINXP ".
but i like to use this.. http://www.matcode.com/remoteshutdown.htm the GUI version..
because it allow the target pc to cancel the command.
note- you'll have a "Guest" listed on the welcome screen.. don't use the account/log in nor enter any password. after it worked you can turn it off in Control Panel / "User Accounts".

Just on a side note-
to shut my PC down in the dos prompt I had to type in:
shutdown -s -t 4 -f
without the " -f ", it wouldn't shutdown because the command prompt was open still, I didn't need to put in the " -t 4 ", but if bot it takes 25 seconds- the 4 is for the number of seconds to wait after the command.

in win XP you don't need to open command prompt windows (cmd or command), if you like to use "shutdown" to restart/shutdown your local computer.. just type " shutdown -r " or -s in the "Run.." dialog box and enter.

and if you're really lazy try this:
ps: only for XP
Xp contains the cool remote desktop connection
Connect to the pc you want to shut down, log on from your computer, click start, shut down and it shuts down.
easy as baking pancakes!

Yup, I just noticed that- thanks-
I wonder how I could creat a shortcut on my desktop to shut down just my PC though? (so you wouldn't have to press "start" "shutdown". And without installing some other program.
Maybe it isn't that simple. I don't know much about programming, but it seems like you could right a small program in notepad or something that would do the same thing as typing shutdown -s -t 4 -f in the run dialog box. I saw something like that on "TechTV "The Screensavers" show one day- but it didn't work at all.

I think that would be a cool thing to have- Press one icon and the PC shuts down, ya know? I think allot of people would use it- Not necessary, just a cool thing to have.
I know there are tweak programs that have things like that on there- but I didn't like the program enough to buy it- it was "Tweak something?" -can't remember, it was a shareware trial and the program was into everything in XP- totally screwed things up when I uninstalled it too- Anyway- yeah, if you think you could do that for Windows XPpro- I would surely use it. As long as it didn't have to run in the background, ya know? Thanks.

I just found out this:
Create a shortcut on your desktop from shutdown.exe
right click the shortcut, choose properties, goto the shortcut tab
where it says he path to shutdown.exe add the " -s " swith to the command line.
and now this:
Assign shortcut key:
1. Right click on the shortcut to the shutdown.exe you created on the dekstop and select properties.
2. Click in the Shurtcut key box and a, like S. This will configure the shortcut to run when you press Ctrl + Alt + S on your keyboard (you have to press all three keys Ctrl, Alt and S at the same time).
3. Click OK.
This way you only have to press ctrl+alt+s to shut down the computer

right click on desktop ->New ->Shortcut ->type or browse.. C:\Windows\System32\Shutdown.exe ->Next and enter anyname you like!
right click on the new shortcut and select properties..
and add whatever switchs you like to use on that shorcut.. on the "Target" box
for example, to use the shortcut to restart your comp. and timer to do it within 5 secs...
C:\Windows\System32\Shutdown.exe -r -t 5 <--add this
