Re: help can anyone explain
You're using alcohol, I would double check settings, especially 1:1 settings. Try a different program to see if that changes. and if comfortable maybe check the firmware for your burner since you said it's new. Always try a different program if you're sure it's not "you".

Re: help can anyone explain
What is your system setup?
Rendering and applications like this are very CPU intensive.

Re: help can anyone explain
Well, looking at your screenshot...it shows that you are burning at 0.9x speed. Your burner, according to what I find on google, is a Samsung SH-S223F, and is capable of burning DVD+Rs and DVD-Rs at 22x, DVD+RWs at 8x, and DVD-RWs at 6x.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151171 You should be able to specify a much higher burn speed. Depending on your media, you should be able to burn at the rated speed of your DVD nedia, which would cut down on the burn time considerable. Shucks, even 8x or 4x would be a lot faster than what you are doing now. Check the options in your software. There should be someplace to specify burn speed. Just make sure that you don't try to burn a 12x DVD at 16x. As a general rule of thumb, I always burn at less than the 'rated' speed of any media that I'm using, just to make sure that I get a good burn.

Re: help can anyone explain
OK...I did a D/L and installed the trial version of Alcohol 120%.
I then burned a copy of the WIN 7 .iso, using all 'default' settings in 120%. Here is what it looked like when I was finished. The screenshot was taken just as it was finishing up. Note that the CPU wasn't breaking a sweat. This is using my WIN 7 RC1 partition.

Re: help can anyone explain
Looking at your screenshot... I see that your 'memory buffer' size is set at 256MB. Maybe upping that to 1024MB would help.
I'm just trying to see if there is anything else that may be making you so slow. I do have an XP 32-bit partition. I'll give that a try and see what happens when I try to burn the same .iso in XP 32-bit. EDIT: OK, I'm back in WIN 7 (damn, I'm getting to HATE working in XP) ![]() Installed in XP, and saw the the 'memory buffer' size was 256MB for me there as well. I also found out that 256MB is the MAX that it will allow in XP 32-bit, so my above recommendation to up that won't work. I burned the same .iso, but had to limit it to 12x. Even then it burned the DVD in right at 6 minutes (5:56 to be exact). Using the 'mamimum' setting it was trying to burn my Memorex 16x rated media at 18x, and it barfed all over itself. It's interesting to note that it did the same thing in WIN 7 but managed to burn successfully. I'm guessing that you may have made some changes in the options that are causing your problems. I'd try setting everything back to DEFAULT, as those settings (other than the write speed) seemed to work just fine for me. If that fails to help, your only other option I guess, would be to use a different application for burning. Either that, or maybe un-installing Alcohol and then re-installing it.

Re: help can anyone explain
I meant the burning process sometimes can be CPU intensive even with a C2D I sometimes get system lags depending on what I am doing. Tipstaff might be headed in the right direction though if your system hasn't experienced this type of CPU usage while burning previously.

Re: help can anyone explain
OK...it's been awhile since I worked with XP, but I seem to remember something. (Hey, when you're OLD, it sometimes takes awhile to get the grey matter up to speed
) I'm betting that your burner has reverted to PIO mode, which would explain the slow burning speed, AND the high CPU usage. Give this page a look and see if it helps: Enable DMA mode in Windows XP

Re: help can anyone explain
well now my whole system is behaving odd it's freezing but the cpu usage does not peak, when i run VMware! ( its like it is dying) ! but on the ubuntu side works like a charm
Note: i even went as far as strippin my power cable (because i dont have a ups to measure the power!) got around 200W usage fror a 400W

Re: help can anyone explain
Check your ACHI settings in BIOS and force them to IDE or SATA.

This setting will apply to the whole system regardless of the OS ( because its from the BIOS,)... what i dont get is that from linux it burn ok, from windows it..... the change that oldbuzzard, advice worked it decreased the burning time time form 1:30 hrs to about 50min... that is some progress!

Re: help can anyone explain
Using ACHI with one of the Windows OS's it wouldn't recognize the drive at all I forget which one. Just threw that out there looks like your making progress anyway
![]() EDIT: Even though is showed in BIOS during boot
