??? How many Restart Computer after each new Program Install?

In many cases now, I'm not getting a prompt to restart Windows after installing programs/games.

But, I do find that the newly installed program/game runs with better stability if I restart Windows anyway.

How many others have the same experience?

Well, I usually restart after installing/uninstalling a program (dont ask why.. its just a habit). But when I just did a fresh installation of XP and there's lots of things to install I just install a bunch of small things and then restart later on, unless prompted to restart.

Wouldn't it be more logical to do the defrag BEFORE you install such a large game? I'm just thinking that the process would take less time overall.

I always reboot I think its a throwback to Win95/98 when you HAD to reboot to get anything to work. For me it means one more error checking procedure taken care of automatically!!

Yea I do the exact same thing...only when critical files or programs that only run on the next restart like AV etc.

If it asks for a restart, I tend to do it manually - something on my system is a little screwed up, and program-initiated restarts seem to result in a GPF more often than not.

I really ought to muck it out and re-install, but I'm debating building a new box and migrating slowly, or maybe starting from scratch with XP or maybe even Linux - because if a lot of my old stuff ain't gonna play nice with XP, no sense filling Gates's pocket!

For larger programs I reboot straight away. Smaller ones I load around three then reboot. I like the thought of having it all set nicely in the registry before any minor things turns into a major one.

I usually restart after installing something. It's just a habit I got into with 98 and have never had a problem doing things that way. So I never stopped.

Whether it really matters or makes any difference if you're not prompted to do it, who knows.

I usually install programs while I am doing something else. So I restart after I finish, or shutdown. Because I usually install programs for later use.

Although during the install of windows I have a method I use for installing programs and what should be installed together etc. before restarts.

I only restart when prompted, but not always. When I have a lot of things to install, sometimes I leave it at the end.
Regarding Winxp updates, I ALWAYS restart, bacause there was an issue when you install 2 updates and the first has newer version of a file than the second, then, the newer version is overwritten by the old one. It's kinda tricky

I restart only when needed. Always for drivers, seldom for apps/games. I dismiss the restart needed prompt, I run the app/game and if it starts then there's no need to restart. If I get an error message, I it will clear after restart. Or maybe not. Whatever the case, I restart manually. But if I'm able to use the said app/game I don't bother restarting until I encounter the first app that really needs a reboot.
