Network Connection Icons in XP (Pro)

This one isn't serious its just really bugging me...

At the moment I have 4 Network Connection Icons showing in my system tray, 1 for my NIC, 2 from my USB ADSL connection (1 is the connection itself, the other is an Emulated LAN over ATM or summat) and 1 from my dial up connection. All of them have the 'Show Icon in Taskbar when connected' option ticked in the preferences but the only one that actually behaves correctly is the Dial-up one, it comes up when I'm connected and disappears when I'm not, the other 3 all stay there whether I'm connected or not with little red crosses on them sying 'cable not connected'. How can I make these disappear when I'm not connected??

BTW, it doesn't seem to matter whether the 'Show Icon in Taskbar when connected' is ticked or not, they always stay there...

Please help, I think I may well have the worlds largest system tray and its doing my head in!!

tragic is on a distinguished road

Try this:

Click on Start:
Click on Control Panel
Then Network & Internet Connections
Network Connections
Then right click on the ones you do not need and hit the disable tab.

Hope this helps

Thx for the reply Highwayman, thing is I don't actually want to disable the connections as far as I know they are only supposed to be in the system tray when they are active not all the time, or at least thats what I want them to do...

open "taskbar and start menu properties" -> right-click the taskbar / properties./ hide inactive icons / customize..
select the items, then choose its notification behavior as "always hide"

thats all you can do for all "network connection" icons, unlike "dial-up" icon which use auto functions (hide when disconnected)
