Win 98SE problem shutting down
I am having trouble shutting down 98SE. The screen stays at the screen that says 'Windows is now shutting down' and hangs there. I left it hours like that but it never shut down.
I have Motherboard Monitor in system tray loaded at the startup.
I just clean installed Win98SE on my spare HDD.
What can I do? Help me, please.
Thanks.

If you haven't already done so, go thru the Windows Update, there may be a number of patches that solve various hang-at-shutdown issues

Tere is 2 patches required to fix the Windows 98se shutdown issues.
One is the shut down supplement (as mentioned by panging) and the 2nd is the map drive patch. The file name is 260067usa8.exe
http://support.microsoft.com/default...en-us%3B260067
I can e-mail you the files if you wish, they are about 1.2Mb for both.

to blah
Thanks for the files, blah.
However, problem still remains except the last patch got rid of 'windows is shutting down' screen. Now it sits there runnig with a blank screen.
Did I mention I have 'PLUS' installed on it? I don't know that would make any difference or not.

Actually, 'windows is shutting down' screen is also there. So, it's just the same as before.

In a real hurry this morning so here goes....
When you 'formated' your PC did you 1st do an 'fdisk' and remove the partition table and then put the partition table back? As this is a file, if it is corrupt your installation will again corrupt.
Have you used the manufacturers hard drives diagnostic tools to ensure that your HD is OK.
Have you run Mem86 to ensure that you don't have bodgy ram.
And please for the sake of all humanity keep that M$ crap off your PC, the OS is bad enough without putting Plus on.

No harm...?
For seemingly no reason at all, I get the same problem occasionally. I find that usually, if there's some program that's being a PITA about closing and Windows will sit there after I press the shutdown button and go 'Duhhhhhhhhhhh' until it suddenly finds out that [Mspservwank32] isn't in fact responding and had no intention of doing so. =P So, if there's one program that you notice is consistently sitting there doing nothing (in my case, it's generally PC-Cillin that has a problem closing) then consider uninstalling it, unless of course you need it (as I unfortunately do with PC-Cillin!! =P)
It's incredibly annoying - especially when you press 'Shut Down', walk away from your PC and do something else, only to return hours later and find that Windows is cheerily saying "Please wait, Windows is shutting down..." - I wait about 2 minutes, and just push the power button to switch the computer off. I've noticed no discernable damage done to my computer, although, Scandisk occasionally pops up, scans my HDD and finds absoloutely nothing.
I should really download those patches, but I figure that there's little point if I'm not keeping this PC for much longer - it happens with enough infrequency to not bother me, but in your case, it sounds more annoying. Either way, I found that it wasn't a serious problem; although, I can understand why you get so annoyed. I know thy pain.

Go to... System Configuration Utility, then Advanced and check Disable fast shutdown....see if that works.

Windows 9X Shutdown problems
My Guide
1. Make sure Windows is up to date (Patch Windows Using Windows Update) (IE should at least be 5.5 Sp2)
2. Patch all Hardware in order Chipset, Video, everything else.
This should fix most problems with Windows 9X shutting down. Other problems with shutting down are usually caused by programs being stuck in the memory.
To see if this is happening start windows and immediatly shutdown.

I don't have the Disable Fast shutdown option either in advancedf msconfig , but I change it in the registry.
It's easy with Xteq tweak utility.

As was mentioned, there is a patch that covers shut down issues related to large disks. Make sure that you have all the latest patches. If that doesn't work, go into your bios and select Load Setup Defaults and reboot. See if it shuts down okay then.
BTW, was there a time when it shut down properly? Does this only happen in 98se? Have you loaded the proper chipset drivers for your motherboard? Have all the latest bios updates? If all else fails and you know that this isn't because some hardware is faulty (things run fine otherwise) consider upgrading to XP.
