Hey,

Basically I seem to have done one of those things where you unintentionally make a bit of a mess of the system and slow it up and annoy yourself no end.

I got a font CD off a friend and installed it, but it put it in a sub folder in the fonts folder. I didn't realise but when I found it, with much fussing around, managed to put all the fonts into my font folder.

Which was my main mistake.

As I now have over 12,000 or something stupid and it's increased the amount of time it takes to boot - I didn't realise Windows loads up all the fonts when you boot.

On top of this, I'm not entirely unconvinced the system in general now hasn't slown down somewhat.

PLUS, the main issue, is that I can't get Photoshop to work properly anymore. I'm convinced it's to do with the font issue. I can get it to open, but when it opens the font tool is open by default, as it was the last thing I was doing last time I used it. And I think the sheer amount of fonts has caused the program to freeze every time I try to use it.

I suppose it's possible that if I left it for an hour it would load the fonts and I wouldn't have the problem again, but I'm annoyed with myself for getting into this situation.

SO - I need to cut out some fonts, but I don't want to cut out the default ones or the ones Windows comes with. When I was shifting fonts around I ended up taking all the ones I could out of the fonts folder, then putting them back (the fact you can't click 'Yes To All' when installing fonts is a right pain in the arse when you already have many fonts installed, so I took them ALL out into one folder, and then reinstalled them as fonts). In the process of doing this I was online and it changed all the fonts around on websites, I mean, even basic ones like Google. So I don't want to be in that position again.

Any ideas of what to do? Is there a list of the fonts Windows comes with so I can pair it all down again?

Will it be the fonts or should I try reinstalling Photoshop and see if it starts afresh?

PS On the tweakxp site someone suggests just moving all possible fonts that Windows lets you into a seperate folder, to speed up boot time, and if you need a font just copy it over, but as I mentioned above, I essentially did this to help install all the fonts, and it messed around with the web fonts, so I'm wary of doing it again frankly.

hmmm i'm not sure, but yah you can try removing the Photoshop and fonts you installed them first (but leave the Windows's fonts intect), and see if that helps.

One thing you can try is to go into the font folder (C:\windows\font for those that don't know where the default is ), switch to "Details" view, and sort it by "Modified". Once you do this it will sort the fonts by the date they were modified, or in this case, the date they were installed. Anything recent will more than likely be the ones you installed with that CD.

Of note: hopefully when the CD installed those fonts that it did not update the ones Photoshop installed too. Going by what Panging has linked to should help with most of the fonts, but wouldn't include ones that Office or Photoshop installed. As a precaution, before you delete any fonts, be sure to copy the entire folder somewhere else on your hard drive (say the root of the drive). If you delete a font by mistake you can always move or copy it back into the primary fonts folder, which essentially tells XP to install the font. This would also allow you to go through that fonts folder, move/copy back what you want, and leave out what you don't want.
