Error Messages

For the last couple of days I get these type of messages.
Usualy when I close a program (in this case a media player), but also when I close a game etc. It doesn't appear with everything, just a fraction of the programs (that are also installed on different hard drives) so I am not very worried, but still worried. Suggestions?

BTW, it doesn't always appear even for specific programs.

Yes, I would check memory and CPU stability.

I don't have a CD to make a bootable cdrom, would a DVD work with the iso provided?
I don't have floppy disks or drive either.

About the CPU...how can I test that?

you can't burn .iso image to cd-rw?

get UBCD it has all the tools you would need to diagnose CPU and RAM

I never used a DVD for it, but from what I have read it should work.

For CPU test you can use Prime95 stress test - get it here: Prime95 version 25.6 - mersenneforum.org

Memory is fine, memtest86+ gave it a clear bill of health.

Run it for an hour at least, as well as Prime95 (use the Blend test) to be sure.

kn00tcn is on a distinguished road

this can also be caused as an error, not memory specific

i guess to start, check of northbridge is getting too hot & if possible, raise the memory voltage by just 1 tick (when i first got halflife2 i had to do this to stop it from crashing to desktop with that error message)

but if it's ONLY for closing, something else is up... i've had it happen when stuff improperly closes (& i've had a friend have it appear every single time IE is closed from any myspace page)

can you get more specific with which programs & when & how many others are running at the same time?

Well it just happened again, while playing a game (EU:Rome).

Quote:
Rome:romegame.exe Application Error.

The instruction at "0x00405aca" referenced memory at "0x0000001c". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to termiante the program
Click on CANCEL to debug the program
I wasn't trying to quit the game.

So far it has happened on this and another game today, DIFFERENT hard drives.
Notice that this time it says "read" instead of "written". Also this is a game, not a media player or anything other.

How can I check the northbridge if it is getting too hot?
Raising the memory voltage? Hmm.

Other programs running at the same time, let's see.
Netscape 9.0.0.6, Opera 9.27, usual creative labs crap, vuplayer, firewall and anti virus, a tv tuner monitor program, fraps, realtek hd audio manager, orandy oneclick and a windows eh window showing the directory of where fraps saves the screenshots (28 objects, about 10MB).

I checked the BIOS and the memory had voltage set at auto, and depending on where I looked in the bios, it was at either 1.83 or 1.85. I can only change it manualy every .10 starting with 1.80. Should I try it at 1.90?

I also found a setting that I don't remember from before, about throttling the CPU. Not the normal option that was always there and disabled, but some new one. Anyway I switched that to OFF, just in case.

I changed the voltage to 1.90 and the last timing to 18 from 15 that I had it. The reason for the latter is that though where I bought it from and newegg has it as 5-5-5-15, the official site has it at 18. And...

It happened again, only this time while reading the thumbnails of wmv files. There were about 20ish files in there. I checked other folders with video files, including wmv, but the problem kept appearing only in that. I then moved the files to another empty folder, and it happened again. It also happened when I was not in that folder, but on its root folder. It felt like the error appeared when it was trying to show the 4 small thumbnails on the folder containing the video files.
In all cases the error message was about the explorer.exe.
I deleted the folder and the files.

I am leaning towards a software issue with wondows, but I can't rule out a hardware issue.

Oh, appeared. Lovely word.
