fonts gone bad in browsers

hi!

dont know how I managed that, but suddenly the default body text font in browsers all is in italic.
and that is independently of browser. my default browser is Opera, but I checked that the same problem occurs with IE.
when I use gmail or google all text is italic.
it doesnt happen on some websites where fonts apparently are defined by the website code.
therefore my guess is that the issue is with the display of default body text formatting.

how can I turn it back to normal?

p.s. system fonts seem to be intact - in winexplorer all menus & filenames etc looks normal

double check each browser's default font style..

& hmm.. this sounds slightly familiar, i remember, there was a css file in the windows folder with default styles or something.. though that doesnt sound right

double check any system wide text & font settings (like properties of desktop>appearance or controlpanel>fonts)

hmm this is awkward to google.. saw some forum mention a corrupt times new roman font

I did solve the problem.
It turns out that the default systam font Arial.TTF had gone missing. Apparently browsers substituted it with next font from arial famaily which was Arial Italic.
Extracted the missing font from winxp installation cd and restored it to system fonts folder.
