To fix the audio or the modem...install the driver... It will always FAIL...just reboot > go to the device mgr > r.click the yellow modem or audio item > click update driver > click not this time > click install from a list or specific item > click don't search, i will choose the driver to install > select modem or audio from list > have disk > browse to where ever you installed the driver, eg, c:\swsetup\sp34777 and select the ".inf" file and click open > continue with the onscreen instructions > when done the yellow item should be gone. Note you should only have to do this for the modem and the audio. Also note, you have to have the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) " ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp33501-34000/sp33867.exe" installed before the audio and the modem drivers. Be sure to reboot after installing each driver. Hope this helps.

All I can tell anyone is that if youn actually have the 916nr like it specifically says in the title, it works. What doesnt work is the audio and modem. The only way it works is to skip them. DO do the UAA, but not he modem or audio. When you've done everything else then you just windows update the audio and modem and it worked fine.
I also used the secondarily supplied atheros 5006x driver which worked but only after installing the broadcom and the other ones as well.
Finally the wireless button will not work, the wireless works but the button doest actually function. i wouldnt let it bug me. The webcam we neevr got working. So if anyone knows the driver for that bravo, otherwise no go. i dont even see it in the device manager at all, period.
Bravo driver heaven and jward and others. between the two versions of doing this i managed to make it work.

this is the 4th notebook i have.....but the first compaq or hp. like 99% of the people above i have the same problems....with the audio, modem and ethernet...surprisingly the card reader works (i don't know how....loooool...). mine is a presario a910em (by the way....don't buy one)...i followed all the steps, nothing...i reinstalled win xp for the fourth time.... i start to belive that the best way to fix a compaq is the sledge hammer. when i try to install the second driver for audio is something like "no media for the device found blah blah blah..." and i can not find the *.inf file CAN SOMEBODY HELP??

Press f10 when the laptop starts - the "native SATA" option is really obvious in there. You have to be REALLY QUICK pressing f10 to get into the BIOS because it only flashes up really quickly. In BIOS there's an option to change this to 5 or 10 seconds, which makes life easier should you ever need to go in there again.
One thing I found was that during installation of XP the keyboard & trackpad didn't work. I plugged a USB keyboard in and used that... after a while I noticed the keyboard & trackpad were suddenly working. I installed XP 3 times (the first time the the drive letters got mixed up so I had a "D:\Windows" which I knew would confuse the user; the second time I realised I'd installed Home Edition by mistake) and this seemed to be consistent. The keyboard & trackpad worked fine during installation only if some USB HID device was plugged in, but that was unnecessary once booting to hard-drive.

I don't know if it's possible to do it that way on this laptop.

LED colour on the WLAN on/off button?
Wow! What a fantastic thread!
Firstly, let me thank X-Raided - I got some of the drivers (including modem, audio & webcam) by installing SP3 for XP and by running Windows Update, but nearly everything else I needed was in X-Raided's second post. Good on ya, X-Raided, for coming back after you've solved your own problem to help other people out. Shame on those of you lamers asking for drivers to emailed to you.
The only thing that was different on my A900 was the wireless card, and the drivers from the lamer's 3rd post fixed that for me. This thread has made this installation a doddle for me - I spent many, MANY hours tracking down the right drivers when I had to downgrade an Acer laptop from Vista to XP.
Now, my only problem with the A900 is the light on the wireless LAN switch. If you're having problems getting yours to work - once it's recognised in Device Manager - make sure you reboot and then try pressing that.
All the other LEDs on this laptop are blue. The LED on the trackpad goes orange when you use the button that disables it, and blue again when the trackpad is re-enabled. I think it's pretty obvious that the LED on the WLAN button is supposed to go blue when wireless is enabled, but it just stays orange on mine. In Device Manager the wireless card is shown as "Atheros AR5006X Wireless Network Adaptor".
EDIT: I've just seen urville's post. The main off/on functionality of the WLAN button DOES work for me - if you're connected to a wireless network and you push the button then you get disconnected. If you then go to "View Available Networks" none are showing until you press the button again and click on "refresh networks". For me it's just the colour of the LED that doesn't change.

Ha! I should've done less whining and moar Googling!
I believe this may be the post by the first guy to work it out:
Myspace.com Blogs - Pavilion WLAN Blues - Pádraig MySpace Blog
I followed these instructions:
Business support forums - Compaq Presario C774TU XP Drivers
(5th post down)
I subsequently looked through the other tabs I had opened from the Google search page and this one looks like the clearest and easiest set of instructions:
View topic - Compaq Presario C778TU Notebook wireless signal • Forum at JayceOoi.com
Now my LED goes blue!
("amber" may be a search keyword)

I bought a refurbished Compaq Presario A916nr a couple months ago and decided to switch to XP Professional this last weekend. Everything works, but I think there may be a driver conflict because my laptop restarts at random. Has anyone else had this problem? I can't figure out exactly whats causing this.
I may need to note that when I was using Vista Home Premium, it would blue screen if it was on battery power on high performance. If it was on AC power and high performance, it was fine. If it was on battery power and power saver, it was fine.
Any help you can provide would be great!
Thanks,
Mike

If it bluescreens in both operating systems, then it's some other hardware problem - it's unlikely to be the drivers, IMO.
I would try swapping out the RAM if possible, also it may be the CPU over-heating.
Start a new thread (I'm not sure if your problem is appropriate for this site) if you need more help. This thread is only about where to find drivers.

Re: Compaq Presario A900 Drivers... Help Me
Can't wait to share this for those who's mic's don't work either the built in or jack in one after tearing my hair out for month's have got answer at least for my presario a920ee but believe it applies to all Presario a900 series Also fixes the problem with the laptop speakers not switching off. Download this file http://rapidshare.com/files/97698854/ConexantHDAudio_221_XP.zip . Unzip it then go to device manager, right click on Conexant High Definition Audio, select update driver, then update it with the driver you downloaded and restart. Now I'm off to Skype somebody - yes!!
