exclamation Opentype font problem (may be graphic driver related)

Hi.

I own a HP nw8240 laptop with a ATI FireGL V5000 graphics card.
I run Windows XP SP2 with all updates installed.

My problem is that my system refuses to install/read opentype fonts. I've never had this problem before, so i started searching the net for a solution. I came across this page, where it seemed that ATI's drivers somehow were uncompatible with OTF, but installing the latest drivers solved the problem.

This only seems to be the case with radeon cards, because since my last xp reinstall i've been using the latest firegl drivers (with DH mod to get them installed).

The last time i used OTF fonts i used the HP driver 8.353.1.1-070508A-047729C from 4 Jun 2007.

Are any of you people aware of this problem?
Is it possible for me to downgrade my driver and see if that works?
Are there any alternative drivers out there for my card, witch doesn't produce this stupid error?

Thanks for reading this and hopefully you can help me.

Best regards
Mikkel WF

If it is any consolation, I am having the same problem.

Reverting back to Catalyst 7.9 "fixed" the opentype issue for me. However, for some strange reason, I am now getting random 4-bit 640x480 mode on boot up. It (Windows Display Manager) won't let me change the mode.. it tries, but any mode I enter reverts back to 4-bit color. So far, my only work around has been to boot into safe mode, then reboot back into normal mode.

I tried Catalyst 8.2, 8.1, 7.12, 7.11 all seemed to have the problem with opentype. I have reported the issue to ATI, but I doubt I'll get a response before I replace the Radeon with a GeForce.

erichorne, what's the card?

there's a big thread (or threads) about the 640x480 4bit issue, wonder if the 2 are related

you all test omega drivers? mikkelwf i think i gather that you tried official firegl cats through dhmodder

& just for a quick test, turn off/on cleartype? but i doubt that would help

kn00tcn, the clear type thing doesnt work..

I recently upgraded to SP3, and have now tried the 8.453.1 ati driver (with dhmodder). NO CHANGE WHAT SO EVER.

I've filed a support ticket with amd, hoping that will resolve my problem.

This is really the last time i'm buying ANYTHING from AMD/ATI. Nothing but problems all the way. Its just not acceptable when you invest in such expensive hardware.
