Microsoft has been using Diskeeper as the deframenter in thier operating system since nt 4, You'll find that its a very lite version tho. Go to www.diskeeper.com, you will be amazed at what the real program can do for you.

for me, only "diskeeper" will do.
but i just cant put up with its service that start with winXP..
its been installed/removed from XP so many time, from v7 - v7.428.
now i decided to dfrg all 11 partitions on the system from win2k or win2k3.. using the DK home/server versions. and winXP'll only use the "PageDefrag" by Mr.Mark Russinovich at www.sysinternals.com

I really recommend O&O Defrag. While the intergrated defrag program in Win2k/XP is Diskeeper, which works just fine, but I really notice how fast O&O Defrag is, than Diskeeper.

Diskkeeper is the best....I also used to like the SpeedDisk which comes with Norton Utilities, but the whole bundle it comes with includes too many junc utilities which just littre your system.

"PerfectDisk 6" it came with build 25 in retail version, make sure you use online update to version 6 build 26.. well this is the best for me right now.. my pc boot faster, all apps startup/run better/faster than before..no more "diskeeper" about time!

there's always O&O soft's defragger too. Not free tho. I've tried O&O's, Diskeeper 7 and perfect disk 6 and i've found that perfect disk's defragger has given me the best results. O&O seemed to make my system laggier and Diskeeper 7's boot time defrag made windows unbootable for me twice (haha, reinstalled windows 3 times that day...when it screwed it up the first time, i reinstalled then tried it again...same results)

I use the full edition of Diskeeper and man! Only fragmented file is my NTLDR, which got mysteriously compressed some time ago... I got that sorted out though

http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/contig.shtml
I downloaded this "contig" - But I can't seem to get it to work. When I run it- it instantly disappears. I figured you have to run it in dos, but I can't do that either. It looked like a cool program.

I use Perfect Disk 6.0 and it works like a dream. Supports HDD over 200GB which is good if you wanna upgrade at anytime. The opimization procedure when defrag'n is very good. There are different levels of defrag too, I use to use Norton Speed disk which was very similar, but thats old hat now - especially with HDD gettn bigger.

place the "contig" in XP system32 or %userprofile% folders and you will be able to run it from the Run dialox box.

Norton Speed disk is still good - But for using it on win2K only! ..Perfect Disk 6 is far/more advanced than that.

For sure.........
Perfect disk is the way to go me thinks.
Also if you want damn good optimization Program, grab WinXP Manager 4.7.1
It's the best thing i have seen for XP. I use to use TweakXp 2.0.11 but compared to this, its a joke!

perfect disk
ill agree with panging on this one, perfectdisc is very good indeed. my main drive is always reformatted once a month so I never need to defrag it, but for my other hard drives its great.
There are the other choices, norton speed disc, diskeeper, and O&O defrag, but my tool of choice is perfect disc.
