Weird Media Player folder monitoring bug

My parents' music files have developed a very strange quirk. On either vista or xp (dual boot), Windows media player can find music files in the "D:/music" folder, but once the files are auto rearranged into artist and album folders media player can no longer search for them - its literally only searching in the first folder. Its got me baffled as i'd assume its a wmp bug, but the fact it happens on both OSs is strange, as if something has happened to the mp3s themselves. Id assume its a permissions problem, but then why can they be found if they are in the music folder? Ive tried copying them into a new folder but the same thing happens. Weird!

P.S. its not a problem with the wmdb files either

How is the health of the hard drive? Have you tried putting them on a different drive and seeing what that gets you? Also, have you tried an other media players to see what results they give?

I tried the 3 different hard disks, all do the same thing. I installed winamp and it does manage to find the music, problem is my parents really like sorting their library by "album artist" rather than "artist" (much better for compilations, classical music etc), and as far as I know only windows media player has this feature. I can add stuff to windows media player manually by dragging it from explorer to the library but this isn't really ideal. I bought them a wireless media extender for Christmas as well, little bit worried it's going to have the same problem!

Winamp media library has the ability to sort by "album artist". I think it was implemented in one of the last versions. Foobar2000 has it as well.

And about WMP, isn't there some setting like "search in sub-directories" or something like that?
