Sony VGN-C240E

Looking for a little help. Just recently moved my OS from Vista to XP home and for the most part was a smooth transition. However when I try to use some of the fn commands (screen brightness and monitor out) they fail to function. I took a look at my keyboard driver and realized that it is for a 101/2 strandard keyboard and my unit runs with 86 keys. I cannot find the driver anywhere. All help is much appreciated.

Greetings and welcome to DriverHeaven.

We might be better able to help if we knew the model and manufacturer of the keyboard you're using.

Please take a moment to read the Announcement at the top of this thread:

Here are the specs to my machine and again thanks for the help
Manufacturer-Sony
Model-VGN-C240E

As for the keyboard I am unable to find who makes it and suprise suprise Sony will not give up the info. When I installed XP (replaced Vista) the driver that was installed was one for a 101/2 keyboard. I am not sure if that is the full reason some of my hot keys are not responding (half work). If you have any suggestions on how to find the manufacturer for the keyboard I'm willing to try.

OK....just a moment......

Since you've reverted to XP from Vista, have you reinstalled the system drivers from the Sony CD yet? OR, do you ONLY have the Vista system drivers? I would certainly hope that Sony had enough foresight to include the XP/Legacy drivers for just such a situation as this.

At any rate, you need to install the Motherboard/Chipset drivers and I'd start with the System CD/DVD that came with the PC.

Good luck!

Some of the hotkeys may be supported natively by Windows XP. The others, however, may need to be setup by the Sony system drivers....that would come on a system recovery CD. BUT, they definitely would have to be XP drivers to work. Some drivers are able to work across the platforms, but not all.

The more I think about it, the more I believe you need system drivers from Sony made for XP.

I'd check Sony's site for any XP drivers available for your model.

I already had a look at the sony download site (here is what they list as everything that can be downloaded for this model) and it appears that the only chipset driver they make available is for Vista
could you use Belarc or Everest to maybe find out the specific make/model of the mobo, that might help.

Unfortunately, I can't find a keyboard or function key driver for this laptop. I had one working on for a friend (downgrade from VISTA as well) and I managed to get ALL the drivers for this online. Took some time, and they're somewhat scattered. Will upload the drivers for you to get. It would be nice if someone could host or upload them somewhere that they wont get deleted or whatnot. That would make it easier for others to find the drivers for this model.

As soon as the file is uploaded I will post the link. If anyone wants to reach me, please PM or mail me. I really just joined to share my info about that model laptop.

SONY has no alternate drivers for any of the hardware for this model. Unlike others on the site, there is no section for XP/Vista drivers. They only have Vista drivers listed. What would be good is if someone found a way around the installer. I have found the same driver for different model laptops on the SONY website. The problem is that the installer detects your machine type, and if it's not the same as the one you downloaded, it will not install. Unfortunately, I haven't found a way to extract the setup files from the SFX EXE package that SONY has. If anyone figures this out, please let me know - as it may assist in getting all the original SONY drivers (for a different model) to work on this model (or another for someone with a similar problem).

*EDIT*
Something that may work for some of the function keys is to install the MICROSOFT KEYBOARD DRIVER and using that instead. Use the MULTIMEDIA KEYBOARD and it should install drivers for the multimedia keys. The function keys I'm not sure about.

*EDIT*
My deepest and sincerest apologies. I totally forgot about the post I made. I'm currently uploading the file. If I don't post it I'll ask someone else to do so.

*EDIT*
Link is here -> Sendspace Link

Again, my deepest apologies for not posting it sooner. Hope you found it helpful.
