i cant beleive im asking this....
i know this is something i should know damn well how to do, but for the life of me i can not figure it out.
under the start menu - programs list, it has the autohide ability to hide all the programs not commonly used, and then you can hover your mouse over the little down arrow icons to show the full list.
anyways, my programe list isnt autohiding and always opens in full. not sure if i accidently turned off the autohide, but i cant remember how to re-enable it.
also useing the windows classic start menu.

I thought this was only possible in Office etc and not Windows.

I'm using localized windows and I don't know if my translation is correct, but it should be something like this:
Right click on the Start menu - properties - (the Classic start menu is selected) - customize... - enable "Use individual menus" checkbox.

no go on that batty, i dont have that option.
weirdest part is that it was all working fine uptil a few days ago, and now after changing over to a completly iconless desktop, that autohide stops working.

I went where RoyBatty said, in the list it is the last, bottom, option. Just to test it I switched the classic style and yes, it works for me. Not that I want it.
DarkLord, did you install any program that changes the style of XP? That might be the reason you are having problems.

nope, i have nothing installed along those lines.
all i did was right click on the desktop/desktop/customize desktop/unchecked all icons
and...
start/run/gpedit.msc/user config/admin templates/desktop/Remove Recycle Bin icon on the desktop/enable
and moved shortcuts into the quick launch area and removed the previous shortcuts that were there and put them into the programs list (MS update, winrar and a couple other things)
heres everything i touched, and its current settings.
