Ok... i got almost everything installed... not worried about the modem, but need sound!!

I've installed 888111, but still no audio... I've downloaded every audio driver that has been posted here, but nothing...

When I run the audio drivers, it keeps telling me there are no devices for the drivers.

I tried pointing to CPL30A5a.inf, but it says it doesn't contain any device information files or whatever...

2 items in my "unknown" secttion...

PCI Device
Unknown Device

Please, someone help... it's the wife's laptop, and if she can't listen to her music, she's gonna shoot me!

Thanks everyone for all the great information.

I had the same error problem, and just reinstalled service pack 2 and everything worked fine.

Anyway, my problem is still the Audio and Modem. Now I am an IT Administrator and I fool with PC's all day. This has me stumped.

This is the second fresh install of XP. The second install I followed these instructions to a "T" and I DID get the Audio drivers to install, but it gave the error that it could not start. BUT it was installed. After installing the chipset drivers the installed Audio driver disappeared. Its gone completely again, like it did during the first XP install.

I have everything installed except the modem and the Audio. There is a PCI Device listed in Other Devices which I can't install for the life of me.

I got the SM Bus, SATA, WiFi, Quick buttons, Microsoft AUU drivers, etc. I'm so mad right now. The audio driver vanished so I can't update the drivers on that and the PCI Device isn't taking any drivers. It keeps poping up with "The Specified Location does not contain information about your hardware".

Right now I'm downloading and installing SP2 for XP and hope that sheds some light on the matter. Any insight would be appreciated.

I just install win xp on C500EA and it works after i disable the SATA setting from BIOS. Once the installastion complete, i return it back to SATA enable. Everything fine, till i install the driver. I download from here : Software & Driver downloads*Compaq Presario C500EA Notebook PC

but then got some problem after installing Winflash. At the end of installation, it shutdown my notebook, and when i turn it on again, my PC refuse to load XP.

I cannot get through even after try to choose start windows normally, safe mode etc. But after i change to disable SATA from BIOS setting, windows can load normally. Umm not really normal actually, coz all audio driver and modem driver that i've been installed previously seems not working.

Can you help me out with this problem pleaseeeeeeee... thank you for your help

Compaq Presario C501TU

I was able to run my C501TU with all functions working properly. Audio, Modem, Wireless Lan. However, after several weeks I can no longer use my wireless LAN, an icon now appears in the lower right hand corner and states that my connection cable is unplugged for the wireless lan. Also, an unknown device has appeared but I do not know what driver is needed since I am unable to determine the hardware in question.

Note that all drivers like the Intel chipset drivers, Microsoft UAA bus drivers and other drivers in the HP website have all been installed. And as stated above the computer worked fine for a couple of weeks.... now trying to trouble shoot and fix the problem is even more difficult...

Can anyone help???

..\SWSetup\SP33442

You should still be seeing Yellow Question marks for two(2) deivces in Device Manager. One is for the Audio and one is for the Modem.

You need to make sure you have installed MS AUU driver first. When you install this program, it will install into the following folder:
..\SWSetup\SP32646\Disk1
There are no .inf files, just a setup.exe file to run.

Next, you need to "manually" install the Audio and Modem drivers:

A. Right click on the Audio device, Select Update Driver
B. At the first dialog, select "No, not this time" when prompted to connect to Windows Update.
C. At the next dialog, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
D. At the next dialog, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".
E. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, do not choose anything but click the "Have Disk..."-button.
F. Select Browse and navigate to the installation folder for ..\SWSetup\33443

It will contain 15 files and a SmartAudio folder. Point to the CPL30A5a.inf file.

For the Modem, follow the same steps, except this time point to the ..\SWSetup\33442 folder. It will contain 14 files. Point to the CPL30A5m.inf file.

Notice both .inf files have the same name except the last letter, where a = audio and m = modem.

Compaq now has XP drivers!

I'm about to jump feet first into the conversion and have been researching this thread.

Has anyone looked into Compaq's XP (yes XP) downloads for the C554US (the version I have).

Sad UAA Bus Driver, Modem, HDAUDIO Problems

I followed a combination of advice here (used nLite to slipstream the SATA and Intel Chipset drivers into my XP SP2 CD). Worked flawlessly (I also took some tips from the "HP Notebook PCs *-* How to add Serial ATA ..." referenced earlier in the thread).

Followed Mr Ace's steps and installed in the order listed (except for Step 3 the Download page for C300 XP - because I didn't know what to do there and the following steps seemed to cover all the bases).

After Step 6 (MS AUU Drivers) I had two unknown "Other Devices", which were later resolved. One was the Broadcom WLAN controller and the other was for the HP Quick Launch Buttons.

I also had "System Device" with a Yellow Exclamation Point (!) a PCI device whose Location was Bus 0, device 27, Function 0 [According to one web site this is for MS's AUU Driver!]

I tried Step 7 (CXT High Def Audio Driver) and it failed "Could not find the MEDIA device for this driver"

Step 8 (CXT HDAUDIO) completed normally. However, no modem showed up in the device manger list.

I tried to manually install SP33443 and SP33442 per Mr Ace's Feb 28, 2007 note. HOWEVER, I DON'T HAVE either an "Audio" or a "Modem" device listed.

I then asked MS for kb888111 and they said it was already in SP2.

I found a download of kb888111.exe and installed it with no different results.

Right now I have the System Device with a (!) (see above) and no modem device and the only audio devices are "Legacy Audio Codecs" and "Legacy Audio Drivers"

Any ideas on what to do next?

TIA

Success!!! Audio and Modem now installed!!!

It was a long road, but I got there. My C554US is now happily running XP SP2. No unknown devices, modem and audio devices show up. Audio works, haven't tested the modem.

Here is what I did. I went through the steps I outlined in my Feb 20, 2008 post except that I skipped steps 6, 7, and 8 (MS AUU Drivers, CTX Audio, CTX Modem). I got everything else working including my networking.

I created a Restore Point so I could come back if needed.

I had a single unknown Other Devices -> PCI device (PCI bus 0, device 27, function 0), no modem no fax

I downloaded a KB888111 I found on Google (to be honest I'm not sure this is needed)

I installed KB88111 (which creates it own restore point)
This moved the unknown PCI Device from Other Devices to System Devices. It also adds HdAudRes.dll and other files to C:\Windows\System32\

I installed Step 6 (MS AUU drivers), this resulted in no noticeable change to the system - it APPEARS that KB888111 and this step are identical, but who knows?

I installed Step 7 (CXT High Definition Audio) and got "Device Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA for this device" [see further below, you may want another driver - but I'm giving you a blow-by-blow description].
I then discovered Business support forums - Driver Installation Failed: Could not find the MEDIA device for the driver
which was the big clue - I went to the unknown PCI device, in System Devices, and installed the audio driver (selected the sp33443 folder) and by magic I now had two unknown Other Devices: 1) "Audio Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and 2) "Modem Device on High Definition Audio Bus" and the unknown PCI device was gone.

The Add New Hardware Wizard came up and I tried a variety of ways to add the drivers from SP33443 and SP33442 without success.

I then tried SP35272 from the C554US download page and it worked successfully! I now had a modem in the device manager!

I searched the Compaq website and came up with SP35940, a later audio driver http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?softwareitem=ob-51724-1&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=3370407&dlc=en〈=en
installed it and now I have working audio!

Thanks to everyone (including Google) for their efforts!

Brandon,
It would help if you provided the device's Location (you'll see it under the device's Properties).

Brandon,
I'm no expert, so I can only tell you when this unknown device disappeared in my update sequence. This was when I installed Step 12 (HP Quick Launch).

After Step 12 was installed the Found New Hardware Wizard came up for a HID Keyboard device. I checked to automatically find the driver, which it did. When I rebooted the unknown device was gone and there was an HP Quick Launch Buttons device under the Human Interfaces Device category.

I guess a quick check would be to see if you already have a Quick Launch Buttons device. If you do, then the problem is probably something else, (perhaps your system requires a different Quick Launch patch?) but I'm guessing you don't have one now.
