Just for curiosity, which EXACT model of C500 do you have? It makes a difference.
Check this page from HP if you haven't already seen it. This should be your starting point for drivers.

No luck it's for Vista only. That's why there's no link. My Compaq Presario C500 came with Vista basic edition on it along with 512MB of ram. There isn't any drivers for Windows XP for HP Quick Play buttons since the notebook was designed for Vista exclusively. That's way there isn't a driver link for the unknown device because under Windows XP there isn't any driver support for HP Quick play buttons for this Compaq Presario C500 Windows Vista notebook. This is one of those design around Vista based notebooks. I'm sure if there was a working driver for this issues then someone would ave already posted an active direct link to the driver source. I ended up disabling the unknown device and the notebook is running fine with out it. If you know of a better Idea then please advise...thank you!

Sorry, I can't believe that it is just C500. The service tag on the bottom of the notebook has your actual model number. Look at this to determine how to find the model number.

Replacing Vista with XP on a presario c502us
I have a compaq presario c502us with windows vista, I removed the vista and installed XP. Everything is working fine, I found and installed all the drivers except that I'm missing a non-plug and play serial driver, in device manager it comes up as Unknown device. Anybody have any advice?

I'm trying to follow Mr. Ace's instructions and have run into a roadblock. I have a C551NR
- I can't install the chipset driver
I've tried loading it from CD and USB. Also, the driver v. 8.1.1.1010 listed is not the driver for the 945GM chipset. I have not been able to determine what chipset I actually have.
It always says "the hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software"
In fact, I can't get any of the drivers installed. Nor can I follow the posted links and find the same driver versions listed.....

Do you know if these drivers will work with the C700 series notebooks also? I'm thinking about the C762NR model Best Buy has on sale right now but I'd like to do a fresh XP pro install on it. HP doesn't have downloadable XP drivers for it. It seems like Lenovo is the only one offering XP drivers for download still. Thanks. Mike

Hi itshane, I downgraded my C508US from Vista to XP. So far I have put back all the drivers except for one unknown device on device manager. Also before I downgrade the laptop I disable the sata native support, but when I tried to enable back again after installing the sata driver given to me by HP online support still not working fine. Could you advise me on this matter please. Thanks.

Hi, I just registered to thank MrAce, everything worked like a charm, except for audio. I figured the way to solve that as well, so... what I did:
After installing the chipset and video drivers, I have installed the SM Bus controller (unfortunatelly I do not remember the address I got it from, but it's signed Hewlett Packard, so I guess it should be on their website somewhere for download) and then KB835221.exe (google for it and download it). From there, the audio and modem drivers nearly installed by themselves. It did the trick for me, I hope it will help you as well. Again, thanks MrAce, you saved my day.
Anyway, should you not find the SM bus driver, email me and I will send it t you, it's only 1.07 mb - niculescuvro@yahoo.com
Oh, and I nearly forgot... the chipset drivers... they are a pain in the... arm. After download, when you run the file it expects you to have a floppy drive to extract the files, otherwise you'll get nothing. I used a software that emulates the floppy drive to do the trick. However, I can email you the chipset drivers (extracted files) if you want.
Good luck

In Device Manager, right-click the IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers/Intel 82801 GBM/GHM (ICH7-M Family) Serial ATA Storage Controller and select "Update Driver"
I5. Follow these steps to complete the Hardware Update Wizard:
a. At the first dialog, select "No, not this time" when prompted to connect to Windows Update.
b. At the next dialog, select "Install from a list or specific location (Advanced)".
c. At the next dialog, select "Don't search. I will choose the driver to install".
d. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, do not choose anything but click the "Have Disk..."-button.
e. Select Browse and navigate to the installation folder from step #I4 and click OK.
This folder will be similar to ..\SWSetup\SP3xxxx. You need to point to the folder for the device you are installing.
f. When prompted to select the device driver you want to install for this hardware, select the Intel 82801GBM SATA AHCI Controller
g. A warning that Windows cannot verify that the device is compatible with your hardware will appear.
When asked if you want to continue installing the driver, select Yes.
h. The installation will complete.
I6. a. Shutdown Windows, restart the machine and Enter F10 Setup.
b. Goto System Configuration -> Device Configurations -> SATA Native Mode Set to Enable
c. Save settings and exit F10 Setup
I7. After Windows restarts, the additional SATA components will be updated.
A System Settings Change will appear.
When asked "Do you want to restart your computer now?" click Yes.
I8. When Windows restarts, the SATA AHCI drivers will be completely installed.
I hope this helps.

Worked well!
Thanks to Mr.Ace posting the solution. Had a few problems with audio/modem/sata which I guess a few of us had. Basically if you follow the instructions to the letter you should not have an issue with audio or modem. Where I went wrong is that I only installed two of the audio drivers instead of all three! (You need conexant HDAUIDO, Conexant High def and the Microsoft AUU) Once I installed the third one there was no problem, simple but maybe that's where a few of the others are going wrong.
With the sata I had no floppy disk drive but the solution posted on page 3 or 4 where it says to download winimage worked perfectly. You can use that program to extract to a folder rather than a floppy disk and it's as easy as 1,2,3 from there.
Thanks again, I've tried to install XP on other types of vista laptops and this was the only one i got fully working thanks to the guide.
Cheers all, I hope my solutions to some of the issues help.

c581wm
So I have a Pesario c581wm, i know this is a kinda an old topic, but heres my problem...
...i tried everything within my knowledge to get EVERYTHING working, because i want it all to work like it supposed to. However, everything else works fine, sound, graphics, wi-fi...
Right now, I'm running XP with SATA turned off in bios. But i want it to work like it should, WITHOUT reinstalling, because i have already done that twice.
Here's a screen cap of my device list...
Any help??? Please =)

Compaq upgrade to XP Pro from Vista
I have been following the thread on the drivers for my compaq, and as of yet have not been able to get the audio to work. I found that some of the drivers that were sujested for down load were not at the link provided any more. Is there any one that can help me with this The puter is a Compaq Presario C500 C501NR to the best of my knowlage. It is a Laptop Depo re-conditioned unit.
