I think all the C5xx series are the same with slightly different configurations. Look on Page 1 for all the drivers and follow the instructions. If you have a specific problem, let us know.

in device manager.
I am @ Compaq C506, All is fine except SOUND....

Update:After clean XP reinstall i can manually install the audio driver (finally!!!)... BUT... it still has trouble:This device cannot start (Code 10)

I've been working on five C500 laptops. The first two, I got, didn't like Vista, and installed XP. I followed the directions in this forum and got everything to work except for the sound (ErrorCode 10 or summat). Then, we got three more and I started working on them simultaneously. I never booted into Vista, immediately booted up into the BIOS and disabled the native SATA. The problem is, now that I've got XP installed, I went to follow the directions but I can't even get past step 1. When I go to install the chipset drivers, it can't run the setup program for it. On all three. Not to mention half the other drivers. I was able to install the chipset drivers from the C300 on one of them but it doesn't really work too well, I can only get some features to work. i'd rather get the right chipset. What did I do wrong and how can I fix it?

for sound and modem (CONEXANT ).. try to install KB888111_WXPSP2_2 ... I use the same patch for my FS , and now for C500 , and it works fine ... After You install KB888111 ( this is for sp2 ) You'll see that audio board is reconised by laptop .. and after You can install audio driver and modem ::

I have a Compag Presario 500 (actual model 508US) too.

Everything worked fine for me. this saved me a ton of time doing my own diggin through the models for the drivers. this and the google search that led me here are a true godsend! Saved my boss $200 easy! more if I had had a spare XP liscence.. but I was fresh out.

So two things. the first is in regards to the SATA drivers. I have it disabled in the BIOS, so it runs and frankly, at this point it's all I care about. but when I tried to follow the directions to get it working "properly", the driver file asked for a floppy. I don't have a floppy. I tried a usb key drive but that didn't work either. So did I miss something? No big deal because it works. and I have wireless, and audio, my two big complaints.

The second item that is more important to me because i may be buying one of these 508 laptops for myself ($500 for a laptop? i'm in, maybe). I can't get the bluetooth to work. As of now i don't see it as a yellow ? in the device manager. But HP's own wireless assistant says it's disabled in the device manager. hrrmm. Other than the SATA stuff, I got everything listed downloaded and installed. So what did I miss?

You can use an imaging program like, WinImage and open the file trying to create the floppy. It will open the file and allow you to put the contents to a floppy, cd or even a regular folder. I just put the file in a folder and ran the install from there.

Its a shareware program and gives you 30 days (I think) to register.

Now, any one try upgrading the Celeron CPU to a Core Duo or Core2 Duo (T2xxx) series?

I have upgraded to the F.14A BIOS and only get a BLANK screen witha T2050 SL9BN 1.6GHz 2M 533 processor. Putting the Celeron back in works, but I would like to upgrade the CPU.

I did what you said in this article about disabling the SATA control in BIOS...but when I do that, the HD is only seen at 76MB not GB! I am using XP Pro with SP2 to install. The second partition is seen at 5mb, again not GB! I dont think I can install XP on 70MB. Please help! And I hate VISTA!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When I did my install, I took an image of the HD with Ghost before doing anything. I could always but it back. I formatted the hard drive during the XP SP2 installation and I saw all of the hard drive. This is before I ever installed any SATA drivers and I saw the whole hard drive.

If you are only seeing 76MB, I think you are seeing one of the partitions setup by Compaq. You should see two/three of them, with one being the largest for your vista install, a second one for Vista data files and probably a third one for compaq utilities.

Try the XP install with Native SATA turned ON during the OS install and see if it will allow you to install. With Native SATA turned on, do you see all the full sized partitions?

If so, after XP is finished installing, load the Chipset drivers first and uncompress the SATA drivers into a folder. Reboot and disable Native SATA in the BIOS.

Install the SATA drivers when XP comes back online as I outlined on the first page. Reboot and turn Native SATA back on.

Let us know what you are seeing.

Thanks or the reply.

1. I do see 2 partitions, one for 76mb the other for 5mb, not GB.
2. With SATA turned on, BIOS doesn't see any harddrive.

3. Still hate vista. Notice the lower case "v"...it doesn't even deserve an upper case "v".

Are you sure you are using XP SP2? It sounds like the default SATA drivers in your XP CD are not correct.

You could build/slipstream in the SATA drivers for your motherboard if you dont have a XP SP2 CD.

Heres the deal..I'm an idiot...BIOS wasn't reporting 76mb it was reporting 76944 Kilo Bytes! It had been a long day and I was tired!

I've just completed the switchover from Vista to XP pro, but still have one issue. I own the c502us and still can't get my VGA output to work. what did I miss?

I also have the C502US. What happened when you tried Step 2 of the instructions on the 1st page? Did it install the video drivers?

I have not followed these instructions yet, but have downloaded them and all files to try it tonight. But I did try to install steps 1 and 2 with no success; the setup programs would error out and not run. But I realized I installed a fresh Windows XP that was the original; not Service Pack 2. I'm hoping that had something to do with it. So first thing is to get WinXP SP2 installed before I go with the step-by-step instructions tonight.

Just interested, what exactly happened in your case...

Yeah, another C502US owner here who's about to uninstall vista. The thing is I'm going to replace it with Xp home, so I'm wondering if the driver instructions are the same as for Xp pro. But anything you guys can tell me about your results following Mrace's instructions would be greatly appreciated.

Help! I'm stuck! I can't get the SATA controller driver to install because I don't have a floppy disk drive in my laptop. When I try to install SP32478, I get an error when it asks for a floppy drive. Is there another driver I can use which won't require a diskette?

can u help me get the xp drivers for my c506 . the laptop came with vista.I turn off the sata and i got the new drive to work.Loaded xp and found some driver but I cant get the sound to work.

moreilly, your asking about something that was posted on page 4 about extracting those files. WinImage is the program used to extract those files.

Anyway, my problem is still the Audio and Modem. Now I am an IT Administrator and I fool with PC's all day. This has me stumped.

This is the second fresh install of XP. The second install I followed these instructions to a "T" and I DID get the Audio drivers to install, but it gave the error that it could not start. BUT it was installed. After installing the chipset drivers the installed Audio driver disappeared. Its gone completely again, like it did during the first XP install.

I have everything installed except the modem and the Audio. There is a PCI Device listed in Other Devices which I can't install for the life of me.

I got the SM Bus, SATA, WiFi, Quick buttons, Microsoft AUU drivers, etc. I'm so mad right now. The audio driver vanished so I can't update the drivers on that and the PCI Device isn't taking any drivers. It keeps poping up with "The Specified Location does not contain information about your hardware".

Right now I'm downloading and installing SP2 for XP and hope that sheds some light on the matter. Any insight would be appreciated.
