pc locks up when i run media player

hi i have a small problem when i go to run windows media player it slows the whole pc even if i get rid of the wmp window it is still slow i have to ctrl+alt+del then go to processes and end the wmp process there. can anybody help me please?

what version, what movie file format, & do you open files from a MyComputer window? or straight from the player

i have tryed wmp and win amp but they both slow the pc but some times win amp will play the sound but no video i have tryed all versions of media player but none work. i have tryed clicking on the music file and i have opened a media player and searched for it and played it that way both just did the same as they always do. but i can play music no problem. hope this helps to help me its getting very enoying
