FireFox and CPU usage

I am having a problem w/ firefox and extreme CPU usage (over 90%). I can not replicate it everytime, but it seems to be related to the built in DL manager. I dont DL alot of stuff using firefox, but the cpu usage has jumped over 90% at least 4x now. Right before i started this post I was DLing a file and had the problem, closed firefox, started the same file again, and this time its using less than 5%. Anyone else have this problem, or know of a way to fix it?

Thanks

Kevin

in the Run box enter firefox.exe -safe-mode

the firefox should start with all the extensions disabled. and if you think the problem was caused by the firefox's download manager then try running the same task as before and with Windows task manager opened, and check the process again?

if that helps. this means one of the extension is causing the problem... no need to uninstall the firefox program files, but you'll need to create a fresh profiles for the firefox and then try installing your extensions one by one and check it after each extension has been installed... this to see which extensions was the actual cause... then just don't use the extension.

if that did not help...,
with firefox is already closed, go to your firefox profiles folder,
for a typical installation of the firefox your profiles folder is most likely to be at \doc and settings\your Windows log on name\app data\mozilla\firefox\profiles\xxxxxx.xxx,
and then copy the prefs.js (and user.js if it does exist) to your desktop and then delete the file(s) in that folder.
now, start the firefox in its -safe-mode again (for now, all of the previous firefox and its extensions settings will be lost) and run the same task again to see if any of the previous settings have causing this problem?

post back what you have found out on these.

note-- the above instructions are for firefox builds upto 1.0.8.

yesterday, i was using firefox build 1.0.7 on a system that i used for posting the above message from, and just got a deer park build installed and just found that it has a new safe-mode user interface which i've never seen before. anyway, as for deer park builds after you ran firefox.exe -safe-mode you can just select "reset all user prefs to deer park defaults" and click continue in safe-mode.
i suggest you back up the prefs.js (and user.js if it does exist) to your desktop or somewhere first anyway, so if any things went wrong with the safe-mode test or your prefs.js had been altered by the deer park's safe-mode you can rebuild and to go back to your previous settings.
