Websites Timing Out
I have Win XP Home SP2 and sometimes when i go to certain websites it works, other times it doesn't. Right now i am on my dad's computer because driverheaven times out on mine. Im pretty sure its a windows problem because me and my dad are on the same network. On my comp, I can still access some sites, but others I can't. Plz Help.
EDIT: I ran disk cleanup and now it works, but is there a way to prevent this?

ping www.yahoo.com a few times and see if you are dropping packets
if you don't know how to ping go to start--->programs--->accessories--->command prompt
at the prompt type "ping www.yahoo.com" (without quotes)

0% loss, but everything is working fine at the moment. I'll try that and respond if it does it again. Another problem though, i was trying to save some web pages but it says 'This web page could not be saved'
Also, I am having problems viewing images. 30% of the time it just shows a white paper with a red X in it.

see to me that really sounds like you are dropping packets or your connection is timing out. I would try pinging the website that is giving you issues at the time the issue is occuring.
you could also try the old standard of scanning for malware/adware/spyware/viruses etc and see if anything comes up...
if yours is the only computer having issues and you are all on the same network, see if there are any updates available for your network card. Also you can try a different ethernet cable (although I would imagine it's highly unlikely you have a bad cable).
What type of connection do you have? DSL, Cable, T1?

I went here:
http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/...eyword=RTL8139
And i became totally confused as to which one to get. Im a noob.
Also, i have a couple more problems i might as well list.
1. Sometimes when i listen to music or watch a movie, the movie/music slows down and starts stuttering
2. When installing something, I open another window because i dont have the patience to wait and I get double sound effects, such as when clicking the back button, etc.
And you probably want my sys specs about now:
WinXP Home SP2
AMD Sempron 3200+ 1,8 Ghz
1.18 GB ram
ATI Radeon Xpress 200
Realtek AC97 Audio

Are the browsing woes only occuring on your computer, or are they occuring on all the computers on the network? Also concerning multitasking while installing a program, with a sempron i do not think you will multitask well, so performance will probably be very sluggish (the double sounds are possibly a by-product of this). If you are big on doing many cpu intensive things at once, without a big performance hit, only real way is a proc upgrade, especially a dual core one. If performance is really sluggish tho you can always try these basic housecleaning steps (and who knows it may help your connection woes).
- Make sure windows is up-to-date by going to windowsupdate.com and downloading all updates listed.
- Go to www.hitmanpro.com and download/install the utility (make sure you get the english language version). Hitman pro is an anti-spyware/adware/malware program that combines several freely available and excellent anti-spyware prorgams like adaware, spybot s&d etc.
- Scan for and clean all adware/spyware on your computer
- Make sure your antivirus is up to date and run a full system scan. If you don't have one or need a better one try avast www.avast.com
- go into the task manager (ctrl-alt-del) and select the 'processes' tab. The fewer processes running the better, as every running process takes up system resources. For example on my computer I can get it down to 16 running processes. To stop some of the unecessary processes from running at start up do the following:
- go to Start-->Run and type "msconfig" (w/o quotes) then press enter.
- uncheck programs you do not need to run at startup. To check whether a listing is essential or not go to http://sysinfo.org/startuplist.php and enter the startup name and it should tell you. (and of course there's always google).
- for an even more exhaustive windows tweaking and performance guide try www.tweakguides.com and read through the tweak guides tweaking companion. A lot of good info in there.
- Defrag your hard-disk
Hopefully that will at least give you some performance improvement.
Concerning that realtek driver download the windows xp version. Check the download package to see if there are explicit install instructions. If not do the following to install it: - right click on My Computer and select Properties
- select the 'Hardware' tab and click 'Device Manager'
- expand the 'Network Adapters' hardware listing, find your network card, right click on it and select 'uninstall.'
- Reboot; windows should show a New Harware Found dialog, when it asks you where to install the driver from, cancel out.
- Find the driver package you just downloaded and install it.
Hope that helps.

locate your system hosts file and open it with your text editor...
and see if it contains any entry below the line "127.0.01 localhost",
if so, close your web browsers and email programs first, then backup the file and then check and remove the read-only attribute from the file,
then remove everything below the above mentioned line and save it. see if this helps?

try other web browsers, such as Firefox, Opera and see if the problem still exists?
