Windows XP x64 = BSOD ?

Hello, I have a question regarding x64 and overclocking..

Normally under XPSP2 I can run my 4400+@2750MHz completely stable but if I install x64 I get a BSOD during install at anything above 2500MHz. I wasn’t aware that x64 would have this effect and can't find any evidence that others have this issue.

Any ideas why this is or is x64 just that demanding that I need to reduce the overclock that much just to run it?

Obviously I’m not going to install x64 if I have to reduce the overclock 250MHz as x64 really doesn’t offer anything that could overcome a 250Mhz disadvantage over XPSP2,, Just curious if others have seen this problem..

System
CPU: X4400+@2750MHz
Mobo: Asus SLI Premium 1009
Memory: G-Skill 4000 DDR500
GFX: ATI X1900XTX
Other.. .

Yes, XP64 will show unstable OCs much more than XP32. Is your XP32 OC dual prime stable?

i ran x64 on my 4400+ @ 310FSB at a 10x multiplier for roughly 5 minutes.... completely unstable... extrmely high temps...

i can run it stable @ 2.73Ghz fine (273fsbx10) but i need full juice.. and my PSU isn't even able to cope with the demands it already has on it..

atm running 2.6ghz (273x9.5) with only a marginal vcore pushed.... stable as all hell. Course the PSU does kick if i push it any higher or push the vid cards any higher..

I'd suggest looking at your ram... or HTT

memory is stable, at least memtest86 thinks it is which is good enough for me.. HTT is very low, only 10x275 and X3.

? 3x HTT? erm.. that a bit low even @ 275x4.. your still within good margins i would think..

but i'm guessing that the BSODs are most likely do to x64 driver instability OR motherboard unstable running x64.

275x4=1100 which many boards will not like at all and can in some cases corrupt the hard drives.

But if the PC is stable with *two* Prime 95 instances keeping both cores at 100% then its probably something else. Try running the PC stock while installing and OC it after you got windows and drivers installed

It will install successfully at stock or at 2500MHz but no higher, as soon as I increase past this I get the same BSOD. Also should note the CPU does 2600MHz at stock volts under XPSP2.

It either appears during the file coping or just after the restart during the main installation.. Or if I try to load a pre-installed install done using lower clock setting it will BS during startup.

Not using Raid but yes the Asus SLI Premium is an nforce4 mobo.

Yes, windows is installed on a 74GB WD Raptor, I don't recall any option by that name..

Only options available acording to the manual for IDE drives are.. IDE DMA Transfer Access, SATA/2 DMA Transfer and IDE Prefetch Mode which are all enabled by default

Nope, there all the options under IDE Function Setup .. There are no other sata options available except Raid which is obviously disabled.

I get NTFS_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA... Which would normally suggest a memory error I know but why does XPSP2 work ?

looking at stuff related to that error.. it looks more like a Windows disc bugg.. or transfering of the file that handles that being corrupted being transfered and then ran.....

Interesting but considering it does install at a lower clock speed does suggest otherwise.
