Has SP2 Ever Just 'Disappeared' On You??
I'll keep this brief
Not used my computer much last couple days, but this evening it went to shit
only boot to safe mode, take 20 mins to boot, no sound of any kind.
so I eventually got it to boot windows normal to discover that service pack 2 had completely disappeared
so I repair installed windows, re-installed sp2, and all seems fine.
except it still doesn't want to acknowledge any kind of sound device, but I'll get to that tomorrow (today..?!..)
So anybody else ever had SP2 completely disappear for no apparant reason?
it's a first for me

That's really weird. I would have done a reformat/reinstall though, just to be on the safe side.

normally would too, but so many comps have fubared on me recently I've run out of hdd's , and only have 1 comp in the house I can slave to to get evrything off this one, and that's in my sleeping gf's bedroom.
so I had to take 'emergency' measures
aside from no sound it all seems to work perfectly atm, but I'd love know just what the hell happened
tis wierd

don't see what difference that makes
it was all there working perfectly, then it wasn't.
and now it works again
I know I'm a jinx and all , but sp2 shouldn't just disappear.....

could be due to some of system files have become corrupted.
if the SP2 files have already been installed then thay just won't disappear,
not all the SP2 files disappear, unless someone else uninstalled it or the registry has been altered or updated from an old backup files.

small correction on the registry parts...
even that all or most of the already installed SP2 files are still intacted, but results of that can cause Windows to become unstable or even unbootable. anyway, in all cases, when you have a chance, you should consider a fresh install of everythings.

As a former internet tech support rep, any unexplained problem would get tossed in the 'winsock file corruption' bin...

Is it possible that Windows rebooted to a 'previous save point' that predated your SP2?
We just had a power outtage here about a week ago when a transformer nearby went kablooey around 4:30 a.m. It caused my machine to not boot either into normal Windows nor into Safemode. I had to actually select "Last Known Configuration....." and it worked. Then I had to do a little updating.

don't know about reverting to a previous state, this was a clean install a few weeks ago, SP2 was loaded on as soon as windows had finished, even before the mobo drivers I think. I checked all drivers and all, they were all up to date after I got the sys running again properly
ah well, that's another entry in the "wierd things that have happened to my computer" diary.
I'm on my third book....

are you using an external hard drive for your files or a secondary hard drive? you seem to be having a lot of software related issues lately. I would run a thorough virus/trojan check

No and no to the first 2.
and I've run everything under the sun on this computer and they all tell me it's perfectly clean.
since building xp Avast and zonealarm have been on and updated daily, Xcleaner run every time I switch on, and full virus scans done at least once a week. oh and Adaware a couple times a week as well. And my router has a built in firewall for good measure.
Contemplating burning a few DVD's with all the stuff I need off this drive, and wiping it starting over. cos I still can't get the god-damn sound to work (soundcard or onboard )
