trouble putting files onto a dvd-r disc?

my friend lent me a few dvd-r discs to copy some of my stuff from my old computer to this one but whenever i try ot copy something over it says windows is uable to do this? any suggestions... and then i finally found a problem i had to use to do it and it got about half way through and then stopped, the disc did apear to have some form of crack in though, havnt tried any of the others using the program yet though, don't want to use em all

any ideas?

System Specs

Not knowing the specific model of your DVD burner, I would suggest though that you check to see if there is a firmware update for your Asus DVD burner - most firmware updates allow for better compatibility with more kinds of media.

Also, look carefully at both sides of the discs you have under a strong light while turning the disc in your hand slowly at various angles under the light. The strong light and the angling should help to locate any possible cracks, and don't use any cracked discs. They can shatter in the burner while spinning at the extreme speeds modern optical drives generate...

I am thinking it is copy protection unless it is just data backup...

What are you trying to copy? I would use a program and see what happens.

thats the dvd burner im using, i'm thinking it was just a cracked disc, but see i'm pretty new to burning cds and stuff of that matter lol.

i'm mainly just trying to copy music and some video files onto there becuase i had a huge collection of songs that i just want to pass over to this PC through the dvd disc.

Yes, I just bought a Lite-On dual layer DVD burner SHM-165...) very similar to yours. First thing I did was update the firmware before I burned my first DVD-R disc (it went just fine). I got the Legacy discs offered as a combo deal for free at the time (just a few weeks ago...). I had read that it needed the firmware update - and the cracked disc is probably just a fluke - try 'er again with a fresh disc...

what program are you using to burn cds and dvds?

I would try to do a firmware update, usually very painless
