hmm, i'm not sure why Biostar doesn't want to have any useful info about this via SATA controller in both of the user manual and BIOS setup manual?

go to http://www.biostar-usa.com/mbdownloa...model=P4M80-M7
then download and install this drivers...

ok.

use Winrar to extract the driver file VIAVT6420_430G_WIN98SEMENT42KXP64.EXE to a folder,
then goto Device Manager, R-click the "VIA SATA RAID Controller" (the problem device that has the "!" in font of it) and select Update Driver..., then select Advanced, Next, Don't search..., Next, Have Disk...,
Browse, and locate ...\VIARAID\driver\winxp\VIAMRAID.INF, and click OK.

first, remove the Via RIAD Tool and its software that you've installed, don't reboot the computer yet,
then goto Device Manager, R-click the "VIA SATA RAID Controller" and select Uninstall and reboot.

once you're back in Windows, goto Control Panel ->Add hardware ->
Add hardware Wizard ->Yes, I have already connected... ->Next -> go to the end of the list and select "Add a new hardware device" ->Next -> install...( Advanced) ->Next -> select SCSI and RAID controllers ->Next ->select Have Disk and Browse to the driver files same as i’ve previously mentioned.

first, remove the Via RIAD Tool and its software that you've installed, don't reboot the computer yet,
then goto Device Manager, R-click the "VIA SATA RAID Controller" and select Uninstall and shutdown.

then turn off your computer and disconnect the SATA drive, and then restart your computer and enter your BIOS setup, change the SATA mode from IDE to RAID. then do the rest on the above post.

try that again, but this time "cancel" all of the PnP hardware detection when you first in Windows.

also, try updating Via chipset drivers to the latest...

recap the situation...
the SATA drive has already partitioned and formatted?
the BIOS detects this drive okay on either RAID or IDE mode? but Windows cannot detect it?
Via RAID Tool and its software have already been removed?

If the onchip Serial ATA has already been enabled in the BIOS setup, and you have already tried changing the SATA Mode option (both RAID and IDE), and if the BIOS still cannot detect the SATA drive...
then this would be your checklist...

the motherboard's BIOS is now using the latest released BIOS file?
have already tried forcing the drive to 1.5Gb/s mode via the drive's jumper pins?

checklist...
have already tried updating the Via chipset drivers to the newer version than the one that is installed on the system?

after you've enabled the onchip Serial ATA option in the BIOS setup the Windows should detect the SATA controller device and asks for a driver for this device. but it didn't do that at all. remember the first pic of the Device Manager that you've posted above.

the device came up after you installed the Via RAID Tool, as shown in the second pic of the Device Manager?

System Specs

i'm beginning to think that if the drive is not being seen in the other machine either... and the sata on it works fine.. there could be a problem with the drive itself.. a DOA unfortuneatly...

he had taken the other hard drive that is known to be working from other computer system and tested it on this system. this means the sata on this system is not working.

whether or not the other drive is a DOA he'll have to test it on the other system?

also, try loading BIOS default. or do this after you update the BIOS.

nop still doesnt work. i tried doing the bios default and that didnt work either.
I think its getting to the stage where i might have to take out my 200Gb ATA and put that in instead of the 250Gb Sata as the computer will straight away find the 200Gb Ata

your new SATA drive is a SATA II or SATA 3.0Gb/s drive.
the SATA controller on your motherborad is SATA I (or SATA 1.5Gb/s).
in many cases, the SATA 3.0Gb/s drive must be preset to SATA 1.5Gb/s mode before it can be fully worked with the SATA 1.5Gb/s controller.
