Disabling (memory hungry) XP services

There is a previous thread on this but didnt want to bump!!llll

Am a newbie with pc's full stop. Only had internet 1 month. Isn't google fine thing for research - found DriverHeaven!!!

Anyhow, was concerned about amount of memory used by startup tasks and services.
http://www.answersthatwork.com/Tasklist_pages/tasklist.htm gives description of XP services, what they do etc.
Edited: I lie! This link is the wrong one and I've lost the one I used!!!! DOH!! I will find it again.
Reedited: http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm is the correct link.

http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php does the same with startup items.

Got back over 300Mb memory by disabling unneeded startup items and various Microsoft services that I don't currently use. I can re-enable when needed.

My system much quicker now.

I used msconfig for changing startup items and services.msc for the services. You can check dependencies on services.msc but cannot with msconfig.

Anyone know a link to find descriptions of non-microsoft services? Tried http://www.blackviper.com/WinXP/servicecfg.htm but site being constructed.

My understanding is that the more services disabled or put on manual not only saves memory but also closes (some) security issues.

Got most of this info from an Ms Director on a Microsoft Forum!! Didn't save thread (sorry) but pasted to Word document and archived!!

Great site by the way.

Sorry 'bout small font, I wasn't thinkin'. I've increased it now.

Thanks for link to mirrored Blackviper site. Still trying to find a site that describes all services, not just the Microsoft ones.

Anyone out their help?

cozumel:

Do search for ProcessLibrary.com, (http://www.processlibrary.com/)

Do a 'process search' and type in the exact file name of the process, (use task manger to find the process..highlight, copy, then paste when your need to type in the process name) Press <Enter> and there you go, all the info you need.

Some processes may have the same name from different companies but if you know the programs you have installed its more than likely the one your looking for.

P.S. Found this site quite by accident one day but came in handy.

last time i installed XP on 1GB - 2GB system's and was around November last year,
it was about 20 services being disabled in XP 32-bit version,
only a few services (system restore, indexing and uPnP device host related) have been disabled in XP x64 edition.

when the system was 512MB i used to install Windows XP with more than 30 services disabled, that was more than 4 years ago.

All Services's Descriptions are in the Services MMC Snap-in.

the information in the Dependencies tab panel on each service's can also help you decide which service should also be disabled when you want to disable or change its startup type of any services.
