Actually this 1st release of vista is a "limited" developer / tester release
I'd expect beta 2 to be more of a public thing and be alot better
Beta 1 isn't something it been said people should't be so quick to jump on...

definitely, but like beside the technical aspects that has been covered. more of the cosmetics can you guys see makes it more enjoyable. like xp the color scheme, start menu and each window was a lot fancier

Its a less stable version of xp with some gui stuff moved around and nifty transparent windows. It runs fine on my rather dated rig which surprized me. (The last beta had a hack for enabling the transparent window effects which brought my rig to a standstill.) IE7 sucks but firefox installed without a problem.

It's very apparent how beta it is... They still have a lot of stuff that looks too much like XP. It looks a lot like XP with just a new visual style, expect for a few things of course.

Bigger, scalable (vectorised?) icons are nice. I don't like what they've done to the Start Menu. Of course there's the new window animations, much better than the amateurish stuff from XP, since it's using DX now. I don't really have any use for most of the stuff they've added to the folder views/windows explorer, but that's just me. Type-as-you-search is nice, I just hope the indexing is not like the XP Indexing service.

I don't have drivers for my USB wi-fi card yet, so I haven't tried IE7 or anything Internet related yet. And either they've changed what data is shown in the Task Manager, or Vista has much higher memory usage than before.

I have to start installing apps now and see what works, but I won't be too disappointed if they don't, seeing how beta this is atm.

Very true, it looked a lot fancier, the unfortunate side effect with that, was it also had a higher performance hit. I always preferred the classic theme, maybe part of the reason was I was used to windows 2000 for a long time, however lets hope all the goodies in the new OS can be disabled for those who like a clean fast operating system without mindless gimmicks and overheads.

but thats the nice thing about all the eye candy this time

the entire interface is now rendered on the GPU. Modern GPUs are more than fast enough to handle windows leaving system memory and the CPU completely free for anything you may want to do. no more rendering the OS on the CPU

Some of its features will take some time getting used to; some of them I imagine won't even be there in the final product. It's still a testbed, so don't think for a moment that the OS you'll buy in one years' time will be the same as the one you're seeing now.

you can disable all the skin stuff, common tasks, transition effects, etc. just like with xp (at least in the beta). I've always used the classic scheme with xp but i do like the slick black vista color scheme much better than xp's blue/green crap (and it's 2 inbred cousins). and how could the novelty of transparent windows ever get old?

I've got one thing to ask:

Is it a resource hog?

If so, by how much?

It is a bit of a resource hog right now but that is simply because it is only at Beta1 status right now.

The code will clean up and get more efficient before the release

However my laptop with a PentiumM 760, 1GB of DDR2-400, and Mobility Radeon X300 runs it like a champ

Actually i am more surprised as to how beta 1 is so stable. i tried gaming and saw a 200point boost in 3dmarks 03 using a 6800gt. There is definately more eye candy this time which makes it a lot more appealing. i like the glass bar and the glow effects. And btw Windows Vista is supposed to unlocked uxtheme so more 3rd party can be involved in creating better themes.

IE7: the best and the most secure Internet Explorer to date. Not to mention it faster in both loading and rendering a page. its simply amazing at how fast this peice of software is compared to firefox. IE7 does have tabs and yet i see people complaning about the position of the tabs. i dont know why you m$ hater dorks out there bash ie7 without using it.

i used the OS and i can firmly say that IE7 is better than firefox by 101%

Just a quick heads up.

the uxtheme engine is still locked in Vista. It just hasn't undergone that much of a change in how the protection is setup so its still easily bypassed.

Thats all.

you know what os's need to do more of? sensing patterns of how you work. autocomplete is an example of IE5 worked smarter. we need more of these kind of tools to be efficient, not wizards of old features.

say if we have a folder of MP3s, there must be a pattern in how we name it. it could of a template for simply the file name so we know to name it by artist, album and then song name. i mean thats an idea. keeping names more organized and automatically taking over tasks.

what we name the MP3 isnt important.

It's what the tagging shows to be the Name, Artist, and Title.

Help with ID3 Tagging in batches would be very helpful.

aren't there smart folders now that can take care of all of this?

how does IE7 compare to Opera? I hate firefox, not a huge IE fan, but IE7 intrigues me. Can anyone give a brief comparison?

+

i have only tried early vresions of Opera and comparing that to ie7 is no match. First you dont have any adds and there is a search bar which lets you choose between google, yahoo, msn etc etc.

i am not sure what else to compare on. there are reveiws on ie7 alpha at neowin.net and if you google around you might find more reveiws.
