Vista x64 + winsxs folder

Alright this is getting out of hand...
since the last time I checked for this, has there been any news or tools regarding the c:\winsxs folder?

right now, running Vista Ultimate x64 SP2, my winsxs folder has:

68,960 files
17,942 folders

for a total of:
16,853.4 MB

really? winsxs takes up 17 of the 28gb in my Windows folder
and that's 17 of the 70gb used on my raptor drive

17gb for winsxs
11gb for the rest of the windows folder

this makes no sense...

any cleaners around? more info on what can be safely deleted?
anything??

NVM, I found it. Under Windows.
20.4GBs...interesting.
A quick look through google gives a good explanation as to what it is. It looks like a very necessary thing to me.

Re: Vista x64 + winsxs folder

Nothing you can do about it I'm afraid - it's there for compatibility reasons, a format and reinstall will probably help because each application you install puts its own stuff in the WinSXS folder. I redid my machine recently because I was losing 16Gb of my Raptor 74Gb to WinSXS, now its down to 4Gb or so.

The annoying thing is that if you look at the timestamps some of the files in there have never been accessed post installation, I think MS should devise some routine whereby everything that hasn't been accessed within a certain timeframe gets automatically compressed by the OS.

Microsoft's answer is 'buy a bigger hard drive' which is fine if you're not an enthusiast and have everything running off a 120Gb IDE drive that you transferred from your old machine but those of us that bought Raptors (or god forbid SSDs!) would rather keep on using them.

Re: Vista x64 + winsxs folder

exactly ... space wouldn't be an issue on a cheap POS 500gb
but on a raptor it sometimes is.
