System requires multiple restarts after chkdsk?

So i'm having this really weird issue lately and i'm not sure what's causing it. It seems to cause no long term problems (i've had this happen for months now), but it is really annoying.

Using Vista 64's built in check disk problem (with automatically fix errors checked), once it goes through the check and I log into Windows, the system is pretty much unusable. A select few programs will start (like O&O Defrag will start) but most programs won't start nor will most startup stuff, like Firefox or Internet Explorer will not load after the initial boot up after a chkdsk. Windows Explorer won't even start (win key + E) and all I can really do is reboot. When I reboot, everything is back to normal but it's really annoying to have to reboot 3 times every time I do a chkdsk.

Did a full surface scan and everything and there's no problems being reported for the hard drives.

Intel C2D 6850
4GB Ram
Asus Striker Extreme
evga 8800GTX
X-Fi Fatal1ty
2x 750GB Western Digitals (WD7500AAKS)
Vista 64 with the Service pack + all updates

If they are ok, why do you perfrom chkdsk so often?

Although I would too since I don't trust WD drives, but why do you?

I perform them irregularly, but mostly I do it when I get the nvidia driver error that hard locks the system that I have to shut down via power switch and restart, I dunno, I guess it's good practice maybe?

I also get random issues that I can't seem to pinpoint and i'm not sure if it's OS, driver, or hardware related like opening a random file will sometimes lock up the system for some unknown reason even though i'll be able to access it without issue after reboot.

I trust WD drives mostly because I don't know why lol? They were the best priceerf when I built the system and the only time I actually recall having a hard drive failure was when I used a Maxtor. Since then i've only used Western Digis.

And yea, Vista is fully updated.

Have you tried stopping all start up processes / services when you are doing a checkdisk? It could be that one of these is conflicting with chkdsk. If it were to stop after you disabled them then you could run chkdsk again and again while enabling one more startup process each time, to find the conflict.

I had similar problem recently which was caused by this exact issue after installing Spy Sweeper 5.8. It turned out my epg auto-updating occasionally on startup (every few days or so) was making the system stalll about 8 or 9 minutes while webroot argued with the epg lol

hard locks with nvidia driver... weird startup issues after running chkdsk...

something aint right here.

Have you run any extensive tests.. such as a full diagnostic of the hd... full diagnostic of the memory (memtest86+) put your cpu through hell (cpu burn of sorts)....

The hard locks with the nVidia driver is an ongoing issue that has long been known at least according to the 100 page thread or something about it on nVidia forums so I wasn't too concerned about it, I just assumed it would happen eventually at some point regardless of what I did until a real fix is implemented.

I've run the whole surface scan thing with Norton Systemworks and it seemed to check out ok.

I ran memtest multiple times because of the funky nature of the Asus Striker and certain memory sticks (known issue, working as intended) and comes out clean.

I haven't done Prime95s but I do run SETI@home for hours on end when i'm sleeping/out and I don't get any issues that I know of.

that sounds very annoying.

wonder if the motherboard has a problem somewhere.

ever consider trying to rebuild the system using a different chipset motherboard? maybe you can borrow from a friend like a low-cost Intel P35 board, try it and see.
