Subtitles don't work with .mkv files

Hi there! I seem to have encountered some problems with the subtitles on my newly built HTPC. After making a fresh install of Windows Vista x86 and installing the following set of codecs (to be able to play the files i wished, mostly .mkvs):

- Xvid
- AC3Filter
- MatroskaSplitter
- CoreAVC

I downloaded and installed the latest version of VSFilter. Hoping this would be the only program needed to get the subtitles working. Sadly though, this didn't work. I couldn't see any subtitles in the movies i played, even though the .srt file was named and placed accordingly. Later on i tried removing VSFilter and installing Vobsub, but no luck there either. Obviously the program must've been installed correctly since the subtitles actually showed up when playing .avi files. But still, it didn't work with .mkv files.

After browsing through lots and lots of threads on different forums through out the internet I learned that this problem could be solved by installing an old verison of VSFilter, namely 2.33. Full of joy, I downloaded VSFilter and installed it once again. But still no luck.

Any ideas?

I would uninstall what you have and install Combined Community Codec Pack. It comes with two media players, Media Player Classic and Zoomplayer. I just install MPC. It comes with the appropriate filters to display any video file you can think of and it works great with MKVs which can have multiple subs or audio files inside the container.

Thank you for your prompt reply! After alot of trial and error i actually managed to pinpoint the problem.... to a setting in CoreAVC. By removing the "Preferred decoder" option in CoreAVC the subtitles magically started working! HURRRRAEEYY!
